Kiel at its best
International Students have made an image film
“The first thing that comes to my mind when I think about Kiel are the colours green and blue”, says Orlando. “Green, because we have a lot of parks and forests where you can just go with your friends to have a barbecue and blue because Kiel is all about being at the sea. In Mexico, where I come from we also have the ocean but here we have this Nordic weather: it's windy, very windy.” Orlando studies Spanish and French at Kiel University. While he voices his first impressions, a light breeze is ruffling his hair. Small sailing vessels and big ferries are passing by behind him and Marta from Italy as they take a stroll along the promenade. Marta is a postgraduate in Literature studies at Kiel University. Since the sun is shining, Kiel’s main park, Schrevenpark, presents itself as a centre of student life – people are taking a time out on the green.
Marta and Orlando are two of six international students and postgraduates featured in a new promotional video made by the University’s International Center. They present their personal view of the State of Schleswig-Holstein, its people and, naturally, of teaching and research at Germany’s northernmost state university. The students from Cameroon, Italy, Mexico, Iran, Indonesia and Ukraine present an authentic and lively view of studying in Germany. The International Center team designed, shot and produced the video in September 2012. They put their hearts and a lot of time into the 3.5 minute movie. “We had two great days of shooting the video. The weather was great and we were able to show Kiel and its university institutions in brilliant sunshine”, Annika Hofmann and Jan Bensien of the International Center report. They were the project leaders, along with Matthias Burmeister of the Technical Faculty at Kiel University, and are visibly proud of their final product.
The film is now online, in German and English, on the International Center's newly designed website. It has also generated clips with statements on sections of the Center’s consulting service. “When choosing a place to study, it is important to international students to get as accurate a view as possible of the University and the city they are going to live in. Moving images and impressions from fellow students put across a way of life and add to existing information in a very special way”, explains Martina Schmode, head of the International Center. “We would like to make international students want to come to Kiel – because of the qualifying studies and because of the sea, the sun and the beaches”, she adds.
