A multilingual archeology program on DVD

The Hedeby Film Project

The possibility of integrating audiovisual media into an exhibition in a sensible way depends on its overall concept and has not very often been successfully realized. An original solution has been developed for the Hedeby Viking Museum (Wikinger Museum Haithabu) near the town of Schleswig which serves to depict the medieval settlement area of Hedeby (Haithabu). A small screening room has a film program in store that was specially conceived for this museum and offers foreign visitors, per earphone, information which has been dubbed into six different languages. The big excavation campaign in the former harbor area of Haddebyer Noor during the summer of 1979 provided the occasion for producing the film. The entire project was documented on film under the supervision of Dr. Kurt Denzer together with students of the Christian Albrechts University of Kiel, so that almost all of the subject matter relevant to archeology at this site was preserved on 16 mm film and the prospective young scientists could gain insight into the methods of filmic documentation.

The program contains an overview as well as sections on individual topics relevant to the different objects and subject matter found in the museum. All of the following works were written, filmed, edited and directed by Kurt Denzer.

DVD 2

THE VIKING SHIP OF HEDEBY

In the year 1953 a deep-sea diver discovered the wreckage of a Viking ship in the former harbor area of the medieval trading city of Hedeby; it wasn't until the summer of 1979 that it could be salvaged in the course of a large-scale archeological excavation campaign.

The film shows the faithful reconstruction of a Viking ship in Roskilde (= Wreck No. 3) and thoroughly documents the extensive effort to recover the Hedeby ship - scenes from the launching in Roskilde and of other reconstructions supplement the pictures of the old technique of ship construction.

Credits: Wiss. Beratung: Civ.-Ing. Ole Crumlin-Pedersen, Roskilde, Prod.-jahr: 1979-85, Duration: 30 min., Auszeichnungen: Prix du Meilleur Film du Chantier de Fouille du Festival ICRONOS à Bordeaux 1994,

Prädikat: "wertvoll"

THE WOODEN CALENDAR -
DENDROCHRONOLOGY IN HEDEBY

In Hedeby there are no written documents testifying to the age of this "Settlement on the Heath", and the layers of soil in this moist swamp-like region also reveal no clear dating of the settlement. But the wet ground has preserved the wooden construction material of the Vikings so well that it can be used to date the period to the very year by means of dendrochronology, or tree-ring dating. The film shows how a "wooden calendar" is formed that reaches from the present all the back to the era of the Vikings
