In Hedeby there are no written documents testifying to the age of this “Settlement on the Heath“, and the layers of soil in this moist swamp-like region also reveal no clear dating of the settlement. But the wet ground has preserved the wooden construction material of the Vikings so well that it can be used to date the period to the very year by means of dendrochronology, or tree-ring dating.
