The Viking Ship of Hedeby

In the year 1953 a deep-sea diver discovered the wreckage of a Viking ship in the former harbor area of the medieval trading city of Hedeby; it wasn't until the summer of 1979 that it could be salvaged in the course of a large-scale archeological excavation campaign.

The film shows the faithful reconstruction of a Viking ship in Roskilde (= Wreck No. 3) and thoroughly documents the extensive effort to recover the Hedeby ship - scenes from the launching in Roskilde and of other reconstructions supplement the pictures of the old technique of ship construction.
