Marianne Tidick
(Minister of Science, Research and Culture of Schleswig-Holstein)
... For our country this is an innovative event: Up to now, archaeological film festivals mainly took place in Romance countries, they developed a tradition there and still enjoy great public attention. Since films made in Schleswig-Holstein were shown with great success for example in Paris or Bordeaux, it was obvious to invite makers of archaeological films to come to the country of origin of these documentaries. Therefore I thank all initiators and sponsors who allowed this event to happen. The great public interest in the spectacular finds of the last years prove that archaeology today is - in the best sense of the word - a popular science. The organizers hope that the festival is attractive not only to fellow documentary film makers, archaeologists, and interested laymen but also to the general public. I am sure the films shown at CINARCHEA will justify the expectations of the organizers.
... I hope the festival will also show the importance of the medium film for science and education, as well as its artistic and technical facilities. Thus I am certain the participants and guests will spend pleasant and inspiring days in Kiel.
Karin Peschel
(Headmistress of the Christian-Albrechts-University in Kiel)
Purpose and responsibility of the university are more manifold today than they were ever before. The classical partition into faculties and the strict definition of subjects are more and more displaced by an interdisciplinary research which has to present its results to the general public. Methods of modern management are included into traditional fields like the museum, the most modern techniques are used in venerable subjects like classical archaeology, not to speak of the use of modern means of communication to publish results....
As a small token of that kind of understanding the Christian-Albrechts-University established the "Arbeitsgruppe Film" who organized the first International Film Festival in Germany as an example of the above mentioned understanding: To use film as a medium of scientific work, to document projects and publish their results...
The festival as a meeting place for archaeologists, publishers, film producers and cinéasts, journalists and museum staff shall give opportunity to discuss the relationship between film and scientific research as well as to encourage international dialogue...
Philippe Dorthe
(Président du Festival International du Film Archéologique de Bordeaux ICRONOS)
Following Paris, Verona, Bordeaux, Forli, Rovereto and Amiens Dr. Kurt Denzers team from the Kiel university organizes the first International Festival of Archaeological Film in Germany. This excellent initiative demonstrates the importance of the picture for communicating the scientific message.
If society entrusts science with necessary research work, then the latter must, in accordance with duty, communicate the results of its work. This purpose is met most neatly by the archaeological film. Since quite some years now there have been people all over Europe getting involved with this thrilling adventure...
Exceeding the success of this festival there are men and women all over Europe who are being motivated by the same love for cultural tradition to contribute to the development of a peoples' Europe.
The Kiel festival is organized reflecting the above and will be a further component in the building of the European culture and contribute to the process of making young people more sensitive towards their cultural heritage, which they shall be responsible for tomorrow...
Gernot Schumann
(Managing Director of the Independent State Board for Broadcasting (ULR))
Film as a modern medium has developed into a facility of research in and teaching of archaeology for many reasons and one could not envisage archaeology without film. But film is also the medium by which archaeological work can best present and transport its methods and results to the professionals and the public. It is a sad fact that the archaeological documentary film has almost completely vanished in the public and commercial television programmes.
The Independent State Board for Broadcasting (ULR) as the licensing and controlling body of commercial broadcasting is also in charge of the promotion of the audiovisual in the field of culture and obviously has a special interest in the International Archaeological Film Festival CINARCHEA. Not only is it an occasion to make personal contacts and exchange experience for archaeologists, film- and televisionmakers from all over the world, but also it offers the archaeological documentary for the first time the opportunity of a platform. In this way the festival effectively draws the attention to a film genre that is extraordinarily apt to fulfill the mission of television to transport culture and education.
Eventually CINARCHEA supports the Broadcasting Board`s assembly, board and director of the ULR in its effort to enhance the cinematographic culture and economy of the Land. The festival sinks Schleswig-Holstein into the minds of the international film professionals as a Land with an interest and a competence in the field of the archaeological film and gives a fresh impetus to the regional film scene...
Silke Reyer
(Stadtpräsidentin)
Dr. Otto Kelling
(Oberbürgermeister)
... We would very much thank the "Arbeitsgruppe Film" (Working Group Film) of the Christian-Albrechts-University in Kiel and the "Freunde der Antike e.V." (Friends of the Antiquity). By organizing this first festival of its kind in Germany they want to give an insight into the world of archaeological film and to try to give the audience the opportunity to discuss matters and to establish contact. We hope that this scientifically well founded as well as popular programme of the CINARCHEA will help to establish Kiel as a festival place between Paris, Bordeaux, Amiens, Brussels, Verona and Forli.
People were always fascinated by events far back in time. Reports about solved riddles about our ancestors, other cultures or epochs have always been the most thrilling stories life ever invented. This will be underlined by the contributions of the festival. Even the dream factory Hollywood uses archaeological themes and is very successful with films like "Indiana Jones" or "Jurassic Park". These popular films can create interest in archaeology especially of young people which surely will be deepened by CINARCHEA`s special programme "Children/Young People and Archaeology in the Medium of Film". In the name of the council of Kiel we hope for a successful progress of the Film Festival CINARCHEA as well as informative and entertaining days..."

The citizen of Kiel accepted the offer with vivid interest. Altogether there were more than 1.300 persons visiting the Kunsthalle ("City Museum of Art").
Responses to the festival CINARCHEA '94
Stephen Locke
(International Jury, Hamburg)
First it must be said that all members of the jury did regard the 1. Archaeology-Film-Festival in Kiel as altogether successful. There was complete agreement on this, and there was the wish, expressed again by all members of the jury alike, for CINARCHEA to be established as a permanent cultural event taking place in Kiel every two or three years. Everyone was immensely impressed by the vivid interest on the side of the audiences and there was quite some praise for the particularly helpful and considerate, friendly atmosphere.
