CINARCHEA 1996
2. International Archaeology Film Festival

"First of all, I would like to congratulate Dr. Kurt Denzer and Martin Weber and all the others who helped organize and sponsor this very valuable and important festival and symposium on archaeological film, CINARCHEA. The symposium, in particular, is important since it is the only one of its kind in the world. There are several other venues in Europe and elsewhere for the screening of archaeological films and videos, but the symposium provides the only opportunity for an intellectual and scholarly forum for the discussion and consideration of this important film genre. As a result, it attracts a body of scholars, academics and students who bring new perspectives not only to the symposium itself, but also the festival. Therefore, I believe the symposium is extremely important and should continue to remain an integral part of the festival since the two events complement and reinforce each other.

Both the festival and symposium were a great success this year. The papers and discussions at the symposium were on the whole very good and enhanced the overall atmosphere and quality of the festival. The program of films was extensive and quite varied, featuring films and videos from approximately a dozen countries. The facilities were excellent and the program ran according to schedule. Attendance was good throughout and the festival obviously attracted a wide audience ranging from school children to specialists in archaeology and film.

For the future I would recommend 1) that the symposium continue to be a part of the festival 2) that fewer films be shown (30-40 is a good range) 3) that the festival be shortened by one day.

Finally, I want to say that I am extremely grateful to... all the... organizers and sponsors of this festival and symposium for inviting me and for providing the means for my attendance and participation. I very much look forward to the next CINARCHEA symposium and festival of films.

"Dear Dr. Kurt Denzer, once again I would like to express my appreciative respect for your initiative of the CINARCHEA-Filmfestival. To me the journey up north was very much worth its while: it is a rare occasion to get the chance of acquiring an overwiev of topically related documentary film productions in such a condensed form.
On top of this I experienced the subsequent discussions as particularly inspiring, mainly for the reason that this festival makes a point of not just adressing filmmakers but just as much scientists, scholars and experts.
I sincerely wish you will be just as successful in continuing this fine work in the future and I would wholeheartedly appreciate if the festival as well as the symposium could get established as, so to speak, an "institution".
