Business & technology
Ideas and inventions developed at the CAU contribute towards technological and social progress. The Technology Transfer department at Kiel University supports and connects players from industry, the authorities and science. Researchers receive support if they have questions about patents, licences or collaboration with companies.
Foundation professorships
These professorships are an integral part of the academic landscape. At Kiel University, privately-sponsored professorships are an important instrument in helping the faculties develop further. Companies, foundations, associations or individuals can set up a foundation professorship.
The term is usually for a period of five years. They are then continued by the university in most cases.

Technology transfer
Innovation scouts
Innovation scouts are idea detectives. They hunt for good ideas and marketable research findings at the university, and act as a link between business and science. In their role as intermediaries between companies and scientists, they know the needs, expectations, skills and limits of everyone involved, which enables them to pair the perfect matches, so that projects with big transfer potential can be developed into a successful joint venture or spin-off.
Inventions, patents & licenses
Inventions are the magic ingredients of innovation. However, there is a lot of detail involved in turning new ideas and inventions into new products and services. The Technology Transfer Department can help with information about invention and patent activities at Kiel University, including offering a free, confidential, initial consultation on all questions regarding intellectual property law.
Cooperation with companies
Kiel University is very open to cooperating with companies and institutions. Contracts are essential for this purpose, and there are individually designed contracts for the various forms of cooperation. Kiel University also offers both licensing and purchasing options for the use of intellectual property rights.
Career Center
A degree is still the best way to protect yourself from unemployment. Average rates of unemployment amongst university graduates are under four percent. We specifically prepare our graduates for a professional career outside the university, where the demand in complex professional fields for people with skills in scientific reasoning and analysis is rising. Well before they complete their studies, students can clarify their career aspirations and perspectives, assisted by the CAU’s Career Center.
Internships
Internship placements help students identify the area in which they would like to work after graduation. They are also a good way for companies to get to know potential specialists.
The Key Skills Centre (ZfS)
The Internship Office at the ZfS advises and supports students with the general practical module.
PerLe portal internships
PerLe offers seminars on career decision-making and planning.
Wissenschaftspark Kiel
The Wissenschaftspark Kiel (Science Park) is right next door to Kiel University. It houses around 100 companies with approximately 1,600 employees. A high-tech, futuristic infrastructure and close proximity with innovative topics make the Wissenschaftspark a key location for innovation in Kiel. The park provides a space for exchange with science, for multi-topical and cross-organisational learning processes, and for putting the culture of innovation into practice. Being situated close to the university is a strategic investment in a successful future for growing companies. Close cooperation with science means that innovative products can be developed and companies can attract qualified employees.
Wissenschaftszentrum
The Wissenschaftszentrum (Science Centre) is the heart of the entire Wissenschaftspark. This joint venture between Kiel University and the City of Kiel is the cultural centre of the site: an open house for innovation. There is plenty of room for ideas and for new encounters. For innovative people who want to utilise their innovations. For those who value the proximity to excellence and science. For everyone who needs support with implementing their projects. And those who are open to communicating and collaborating with others.
