Music ensembles at Kiel University

Collegium Musicum - university orchestra

Kiel University’s Collegium Musicum was founded back in 1921 and has a long tradition. Orchestral programmes are performed in the summer semesters, which include a wide spectrum of musical directions, from symphonies and solo concerts of the classic-romantic repertoire through to musical and film music. In the winter semesters, choral-symphonic pieces are performed together with the Studentenkantorei. New members are welcome at the start of the semester.

Studentenkantorei - university choir

The Studentenkantorei at Kiel University has had a fixed position in Kiel’s music scene since its foundation in 1968. It offers students from all faculties and other interested people the opportunity to work on and perform sophisticated choral pieces.

Bach ensemble

The Bach ensemble, founded in 1992, has set itself the task of performing baroque music, especially instrumental music from Johann Sebastian Bach, as part of its own series of concerts titled “Auftakt mit Bach” (Opening with Bach). The Brandenburg Concertos, the four orchestral suites, violin concertos and - assisted by the vocal ensemble - Bach pieces for choirs and orchestras have been performed to date.

Vocal ensemble

In addition to the musical offers at Kiel University, selected members of the Studentenkantorei form the vocal ensemble, which rehearses and performs pieces of music in small groups (e.g. Brahms: Liebeslieder waltzes, vocal quartets; Bach: cantatas, St. John Passion, church music in Latin and the Mass in B minor).

Academic choir

The academic choir was founded in the winter of 1986 and performs mainly sacred (choral) pieces from baroque, classical, romantic and modern music, every semester, together with the chamber orchestra. The choir usually consists of around 50-70 students and alumni from all faculties. New singers are very welcome. If you are interested, please sign up for one of the first rehearsals or come along to the rehearsals for the Christmas Oratorio.

Other music ensembles

Big Band der Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel e.V.

Kiel University’s Big Band association was founded in 1987. A group of musically enthusiastic physics students and professors has since developed the band into one with high standards and a rich sound, which impresses audiences in Kiel and beyond.
