This issue of unizeit aims to provide the usual insight into current research and stories about the people at Kiel University. The world looked quite different, though, while we were preparing these exciting topics for you to read about. Today we are confronted with Russia’s wrongful attack on Ukraine which violates international law. Our day to day lives at the moment are a permanent mental balancing act, because people are currently dying in Europe in a war, millions are on the run. Students and staff are affected, both directly and indirectly. But we also have an important duty and assume responsibility as a scientific institution, for society and for the people who turn to our university in order to continue their studies or research. We have set up an information portal for those who need help as well as the helpers. Read more about this on page 12.
We also have articles in this issue drawing your attention to algorithms and quantum computers, innovations in agriculture and the magic of reading.
