Kiel: an overview
The largest stretch of nature in Kiel is its fjord, which is lined with
beaches. The sea reaches right into the heart of the city and "splits"
it into the "East and West Bank" or what we call the „Ost-
und Westufer“.
The Westufer is divided into "north of the Canal" and "south
of the Canal" by the Kiel Canal, which enters the Fjord through the
locks at Holtenau.
The University's main campus is located on the
Westufer, south of the Canal, in the Ravensberg district. The
Technical Faculty (apart from the IT department) is located on
the Ostufer in the district of Gaarden.
The official page Kiel
- a city portrait will give you an initial overview of the
city.

of the City of Kiel is available here.
Living in and around Kiel
Kiel
The districts of Ravensberg, Brunswik, Damperhof, Wik and the areas around
Blücherplatz, Exerzierplatz and Schrevenpark are central and near
the campus. Apartment buildings about four or five stories high are characteristic
of these areas. There are still some lovely old apartments, and the area
is very popular with families and students. The University is easy to
reach by bike.
The residential district of Düsternbrook is very near the Kiel Fjord.
It is home to many of Kiel's finest villas and the recreational wooded
area of Düsternbrooker Gehölz.
The University
guesthouses for researchers visiting from abroad are located
in Düsternbrook.
Neighbouring districts/communities
The neighbouring town of Kronshagen is very close to the campus. In Kronshagen
detached, semi-detached and terraced houses predominate, making it attractive
for families. On the Ostufer of the Fjord are Mönkeberg, Kitzeberg,
Heikendorf and Laboe, (driving time to University 20 to 40 minutes). These
villages, which are all close to the Fjord's beaches, are popular residential
areas.
Similarly attractive villages on the Westufer, north of the Canal, are
Altenholz, Dänischenhagen and Strande.

If you plan to move into a neighbouring district, please note,
that childcare in Kiel (e.g. on campus) will not be possible.
