Kiel Nano Science

The research focus Nano Science and Surface Research strives to establish methods that will result in new material systems for self-monitoring and the self-regulation of medical therapies. Here, close and inter-disciplinary cooperation between scientists in the areas of material science, physics, chemistry, bionics, electronics, computer science, and other medical disciplines are essential. With the formation of the Collaborative Research Center (SFB) 667 Function by Switching Kiel set up a coordinated project that combines these competencies. Forming another important step toward excelling in Nano Science, Kiel and the Ernst-Moritz-Arndt-University of Greifswald are working together at the Transregional Collaborative Research Centre Greifswald-Kiel SFB TR-24 Fundamentals of Complex Plasmas. An intensive research of nano technology within the medical field has also given rise to the third, recently founded, Collaborative Research Center SFB 855 on Magneto-Electric Composites and Heterostructures for Medical Sensor Application.

This successful inter-disciplinary collaboration has also enabled the university to take part in the Excellence Cluster Materials for Life.

The subject area Nano Science uses a combined scientific platform called Nanolab, as well as the platforms Modelling and Data Management.
