The Excellence Initiative

Kiel University has successfully obtained funding for three projects, each for two funding periods, as part of the German Excellence Initiative (2006-2019). The Clusters of Excellence “The Future Ocean” and “Inflammation at Interfaces”, as well as the Graduate School “Human Development in Landscapes”, deal with relevant research issues of our time. More information can be found here...

The future of our society depends not least on the development of the oceans. The world’s oceans play a key role in the global climate, pose risks to the coastlines due to the global rise in sea levels, the occurrence of tsunamis and landslides in the sea, or the progressive acidification of the oceans due to the increasing absorption of the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide (CO2). However, the oceans simultaneously offer opportunities in the form of resources that people can use. These include marine medicine, as well as fishing or new sources of energy. In cooperation with the GEOMAR - Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel and the Research and Technology Centre in Büsum, the Kiel Cluster of Excellence "The Future Ocean" explores these topics with a broad, multidisciplinary approach that is unique in Germany.

In their investigation of inflammatory processes, researchers at the Kiel Cluster of Excellence adopt a holistic approach: they strive to fully understand inflammations at interfaces, from their genetic variance right through to distinctly different manifestations in individuals. In doing so, they utilise the whole range of expertise that the participating research institutions have to offer. The Cluster of Excellence "Inflammation at Interfaces" is a joint undertaking of the universities of Kiel and Lübeck, in cooperation with the University Medical Center Schleswig-Holstein, the Research Center Borstel – Leibniz Center for Medicine and Biosciences, the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Biology in Plön and the Muthesius University of Fine Arts and Design in Kiel.

Graduiertenschule "Human Development in Landscapes"

The environment is showing itself to be an increasingly determining factor in humanity’s social and cultural developments. But our environment is also a product of these developments. A thorough understanding of the complex relationships between society, culture and the environment thus plays a key role in the study of dynamic processes of change, in which the three areas cannot be viewed separately from each other. The Graduate School "Human Development in Landscapes", together with the Centre for Baltic and Scandinavian Archaeology (ZBSA) in Schleswig, therefore devotes itself to researching this topic in a previously-unprecedented interdisciplinary manner on past societies.
