These are accessible at the following address: http://pooh.esrin.esa.it:8888/ew/floods.htm Acquisitions over areas of Poland, the Czech Republic, Germany and Austria from July 12 onwards give an idea of the extent of the catastrophe that has hit a large part of northern Europe these last few weeks. Topographic maps of the areas, merged with the available satellite data, are also accessible. During emergencies of this kind, it is often difficult to obtain an overall view of the areas hit, especially since weather conditions are usually such as to preclude, for example, aerial observation. The authorities need a quick response in order to identify areas that need immediate assistance. ESA's ERS Earth Observation satellites carry a Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) instrument, which is able to collect data independently of weather and light conditions, but it is also possible to acquire data with optical satellites when cloud cover is reasonably light. Readily processed data and information can be made available to authorities just a few hours after the satellite has flown over the disaster area. The Earth Watching project was started at the end of 1993 to monitor such emergencies, and is a collaborative effort between Eurimage (ESA's commercial distributor of remote sensing data) and ESRIN, the ESA centre in charge of exploiting Earth Observation data. Putting remote-sensing data online is part of a promotional activity for the Earth Watching project to make authorities and institutions aware of the potentialities of such data. Note to editors: ESA is coordinating the provision of data for the Polish and Czech Republic authorities, working with DLR (the German Aerospace Research Establishment) and one of the four ESA Processing and Archiving Centres for ERS data. DLR also maintains a server with recent ERS data covering the flooded areas (http://www.dfd.dlr.de/app/index.html). Neue Versionen von interessanter Software fuer Schulen im Web
Netscape Communicator 4.01 fuer Windows 95/NT ist jetzt auf deutsch erschienen. Fuer Schulen interessant sind besonders die Offline-Browserfunktionalitaet, fuer die bisher zusaetzliche Share- oder Freeware erforderlich war.Die angekuendigte Betaversion des DOS-Browsers Webspyder ist jetzt freigegeben unter www.caldera.com. Eine Registrierung ist erforderlich. Die Nuztung ist kostenlos. Es werden nur Pakettreiber vorausgesetzt, ein TCP/IP-Stack ist eingebaut. Die Hardwareanforderungen sind mir nicht bekannt.
Das von mir bereits vorgestellte Lehrbuch zu Java ist der Release 8 unter http://www.eckelobjects.com/eckel/javabook.htm erhaeltlich. Es behandelt jetzt Java unter Mac sowie JDK 1.1.3
Die beliebte Datenbank Mini-SQL ist jetzt offiziell in der Version 2.0 erschienen. Sie ist im Source-Code fuer Unix (Linux) erhaeltlich unter http://www.hughes.com.au/
Sie ist besonders gut zur Kopplung mit Web-Servern geeignet, z.B. fuer Page-Counter, Gaestebuecher, Adressdatenbanken, etc.Alle vorgestellten Komponenten sind fuer den Aufbau von Intranets in Schulen geeignet und fuer Schulen kostenlos.

Schulprojekt über Europa
DIES IST EINE EINLADUNG zur neuer Beteiligung an unserm internationalen Schulprojekt über Europa.
WIR SIND eine Gruppe von 45 Schülern (Alter: 13/14) und 10 Lehrern am St .Michaelcollege, Zaandam, Niederlande. Unsere Schule liegt in der unmitelbaren Nähe der "Zaanse Schans", eines berümten, großen Freiluftmuseums 15 Km noerdlich von Amsterdam.
WIR HÄTTEN GERN KONTAKT mit Schulen in Europa zwecks Zusammenarbeit in unserem Schulprojekt vom Anfang Februar bis zum Mitte März 1997
ZIEL DES PROJEKTS ist die Entdeckung und Diskussion von Übereinkünften und Unterschieden im Alltag der Schüler in Europa. Unsere Schüler werden mindestens 6 Länder untersuchen, wahrscheinlich: Deutschland, Frakreich, Finland, Italien, Schweden und UK (England) Neben anderen Quellen (Buch, Zeitschrift usw.) kann elektronische Post (E-mail) sehr wertvoll sein. - Voriges Jahr haben wir schon begeisterte Reaktionen bekommen.

Folgende Mitteilung wurde verteilt - wir veröffentlichen sie hier ohne Prüfung des Wahrheitsgehaltes - jede/r Leser/-in möge selbst entscheiden, wie sie/er mit dieser Mail umgeht, die ja in letzter Konsequenz erhebliche Einschnitte in die freie Kommunikation bedeutet. Matthias Buelow (sybmb@du.gtn.com) vom Sybex-Verlag sucht Schueler als Autoren eines Buchs mit dem Arbeitstitel "Internet fuer Schueler".
Er legt Wert auf die Schuelerperspektive. Geeignet sind alle Beitraege die sich um Internet, Schule und Schueler aus eigener Erfahrung ranken.

Teachers Needed to Test Global Lab Curriculum
Global Lab is an international science program which engages students in investigative science. The program leads students through observing and monitoring a local study site, and on into telecommunications-based collaborations, data sharing and data analysis with a world-wide network of students.
The current Global Lab materials were developed by TERC under grants from the National Science Foundation. TERC has received a new grant to adapt these materials into a year-long high school course, and to achieve publication, distribution and widespread, world-wide, use of the materials.
The Global Lab Project is looking for teachers of students of ages 13-15 to co-develop and pilot elements of the new Global Lab course during the 1996-97 school year. Through interdisciplinary (Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Geology) investigations of local and global environments, the course will enable students to explore major science concepts and develop research skills and strategies. Students will use state-of-the-art instrumentation for collecting data in the field and lab; they will use telecommunications and the World Wide Web to collaborate with their peers around the world.
We are seeking teachers or teams of teachers with a range of experience in inquiry-based learning, telecommunications, and integrated science. Classrooms will need access to the Internet. Curriculum materials, instrumentation and telecommunication support will be provided.
We understand that many sites, particularly international sites, will not be able to implement immediately all of the material Global Lab will be making available. We encourage selected sites to implement those parts of the course that are valuable to them and to participate in the GL discussions. We ask only that [1] sites tell us what they have chosen to do and why, and [2] provide feedback on the materials they have used and the activities they have participated in.

Schule in den USA sucht Kontakte
Ich bin Deutschlehrer auf einer High School noerdlich von Seattle im Staat Washington. In 2-3 Wochen sollen wir endlich Internetzugang in unserem Klassenzimmer bekommen. Erst dann koennen meine Schueler beginnen, E-Mail Briefe zu schreiben. Ich habe dieses Jahr 100 Schueler, 15-18 Jahre alt, die sehr gerne E-Mail Freunde in Deutschland, Oesterreich, oder in der Schweiz bekommen moechten. Meine Schueler lernen alle Deutsch, aber erst seit zwei Wochen, seit einem Jahr, oder seit zwei Jahren. Es waere schoen, wenn einige zuverlaessige Schueler im Alter von 15-21 Jahren an meine Schueler schreiben wuerden. Meine Schueler warten gespannt auf neue E-Mail Freunde in Europa.
