  • 2005: Habilitation in Zoology und Biological Oceanography at the Christian-Albrechts-University of Kiel; title of the habilitation thesis "Distribution, activity and foraging behaviour of seabirds in north-central European seas in relation to physical, biological and anthropogenic conditions"
  • 1997: PhD in Zoology at the Christian-Albrechts-University of Kiel; title of the PhD thesis "Distribution and abundance of North Sea seabirds and their feeding ecology in relation to fisheries and hydrography"
  • 1993: Diploma in Biology at the Christian-Albrechts-University of Kiel (main examen: Zoology, other examens: Biological Oceanography and Physical Oceanography); title of the Diploma thesis "Quantification of discards and offal of fisheries in the southeastern North Sea and their utilization by seabirds"

  • Studies on the foraging ecology of selected seabirds species by data logger techniques (telemetry) and diet analyses
  • Spatial-temporal dynamics of seabirds in shelf areas
  • Relationships between abiotic and biotic factors and seabird distribution patterns
  • Short and long-term population changes in seabirds and their causes
  • Scientific bases in the conflict field between marine nature conservation and marine exploitation (mainly fisheries and offshore wind farms)
