The Institute for Infection Medicine provides the full spectrum of diagnostic state-of-the-art procedures in Infectious Diseases, including counseling in antiinfective therapy, diagnostics and prevention. The Federal Reference laboratory (Konsiliarlabor) for Klebsiella is situated at the Institute; correspondingly, a broad spectrum of methods for the diagnosis of enterobacterial infections and drug resistance (ESBL) is available. The Institute also hosts the Competence center for infection epidemiology of the State Schleswig-Holstein. In addition, the UKSH Central service unit for Hospital and Environment Hygiene is situated in the same building. Moreover, the Medical Analysis Laboratory Kiel (Medizinaluntersuchungsamt Kiel) of the State Schleswig-Holstein is closely associated with both the Institute and the Hygiene Unit. The Institute developed from the traditional Hygiene Institute initially founded in 1888. In history, the major topics were formed by emerging new bacterial pathogens, by the causes of tropical infectious diseases, by environment and social hygiene, as well by race hygiene during a less prestigious phase of history. In 1980, the Institute diversed into three chairs and departments, namely Immunology, Medical Microbiology and Virology, as well as Social and Environmental Hygiene. In 2003, the Hygiene department was converted to a central service unit of the UKSH. In 2006, the former Institute for Medical Microbiology and Virology changed its name into Institute for Infection Medicine. The main research focus of the Institute for Infection Medicine combines Clinical with Molecular Virology and covers methods and concepts in molecular and cell biology, biochemistry, experimental oncology, and immunology. In addition, the Institute's activities in antiinfective compound research and biofilm formation, in infection epidemiology as well as its integration into different scientific schedules in Kiel and Schleswig-Holstein such as the Excellence Cluster Inflammation at Interfaces are relevant contributions. The Institute for Infection Medicine is responsible for the education in Microbiology, Virology and Hygiene for students of medicine or dentistry. Moreover, we offer the subject "Molecular Infection Biology" with the MSc modules "Virology" and "Microbial Pathogenesis" to students in Biology, Biochemistry or Medicine. We are happy to provide you here with an overview on the clinical and research interests of the Institute for Infection Medicine and I am looking forward to a further fruitful development.
