About KiBiDaNO

The KiBiDaNo Image Database is a University of Kiel initiative that provides digital resources for teaching and research related to the Middle East. The database has been founded by Prof. Dr. Rüdiger Bartelmus of the Institute of Old Testament Studies and Biblical Archaeology at the Faculty of Theology. It is rapidly growing and so far provides images of Iran, Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Palestine, Syria and Turkey. It the future the database will also cover Egypt. The site is meant as a wide-ranging reference for research and education and is directed at teachers and students of the cultural, geographical and economic sciences of the Middle East. The images can be downloaded free of charge in Adobe RGB (1998) colour space suitable for digital presentations up to 1.5 x 2 m. In addition the images can be purchased for publication in jpg or tif format and converted to CMYK (Euroscale Coated v2) with a resolution of up to 4000 Pixel per inch. For this service please contact: kibidano@email.uni-kiel.de or rbartelmus@email.uni-kiel.de). KiBiDaNo is a non-profit making project and income will be used for the improvement of the site. It is currently funded by the University of Kiel with the aim that it will be self-supporting in the future.

The earliest images published by KiBiDaNo are late 19th century photographs reproduced from non-copyright books. The majority of the photographs, however, are slides taken by professors of Old Testament Studies and Biblical Archaeology from the 1950s to the present. These images often reflect site conditions that are no longer in existence or have been changed considerably through natural catastrophe, war and peaceful human interference. The sources of the images so far are the slide collections of Christine Abart, Afshin Bakhtiar, Alexa Bartelmus, Corinna Bartelmus, Heide Bartelmus, Rüdiger Bartelmus, Bernd Bäss (†), Anna Düring, Barbara Hertenberger, Ulrich Hübner, Jens Kamlah, Christiane Krolovitsch, Jascha Lemburg, Claas Oberbeck, Taghi Rahnemai, Werner Riedel, Christian Rose, Günter Schiemenz, Hans-Joachim Stoebe (†), Moya Tönnies, Ina Willi-Plein. Other contributors are welcome! The images are digitalized and described by an interdisciplinary group at Kiel University headed by Prof. Dr. Rüdiger Bartelmus, who is responsible for the contents. Members of the group are: Carsten Binder, Christian Demandt, Corinna Felsch, Sybille Kambeck, Christiane Krolovitsch, Jan Marr, Mareike Meier, Tilman Neuschild, Tordis Pohlmann, Christian Rose, Sven Lesemann, Moya Tönnies. Advisers have been and are: Prof. Dr. Silke Göttsch-Elten (Inst. of Cultural Anthropology), Prof. Dr. Anja Pistor-Hatam (Inst. of Islamic Studies), Prof. Dr. Horst Sterr (Inst. of Geography), Prof. Dr. Josef Wiesehöfer (Inst. of Ancient History). Technical support is provided by Dirk Krämer of the data processing centre at the University of Kiel.

The searchable database currently provides 18000 images for the user, 16000 so far with an accompanying text.

It is a specific feature of the KiBiDaNo Image Database that place-names are not only given in the national language of the country and in German but also in as many other traditions and conventions as possible. Users are able to search for place-names of a region or language that have changed in history or are transcribed in a variety of forms. This feature acknowledges that there is no „right“ way of naming or spelling place-names and it can lead the user to further toponymic study. Arabic, Persian, Greek, Hebrew and Turkish script is in Unicode and browsers set to ISO-8859 or Unicode UTF-8 are recommended.

We encourage the user to comment on the pictures or on the texts and space for this purpose is provided at the bottom of each page.
