Raising a stone - revealing a secret?
This summer, archaeologists from Kiel University are undertaking a field campaign near Hundisburg (Saxony-Anhalt), excavating a megalithic tomb dating from the early Neolithic. A special moment occurred when the 2.5 ton capstone was lifted. (2012/07/30)
Comparing Neolithic landscapes
Thirty researchers from Ireland and Kiel came together at the Graduate School from July 2 to 4, 2012 with the aim of comparing Neolithic landscapes in northwest Ireland and northwest Germany. (2012/07/20)

Underwater research

Inspiring new neighbourhood

From Bosau to Falbygden
Archaeologist Karl-Göran Sjögren's stay at Kiel University continues a long tradition: The first Scandinavian guest professors came here already in the 1960s. Conference on sacral landscapes
GS members Professor Lutz Käppel and Dr Vassiliki Pothou from the Institute of Classics at Kiel University organize a conference on "Human Development in sacral Landscapes – between ritual tradition, creativity and emotionality". From May 5 to 7, researchers from Europe and America come together in Delphi to discuss topics such as "Ritual and Landscape in the Homeric Hymn to Apollo" or “Landscape and the cosmos in Apolline rites of Delphi and Delos", but also Archaeo-Astronomy or Archaeobotany. Among the participants are GS members Professor Antonia Davidovic, Dr Helmut Kroll, Bettina Schulz Paulsson and Michael Teichmann. You can download the programme and the poster of the conference. Visitors with good advice
The Advisory Board of the Graduate School came together in Kiel on November 25th and 26th. Professor Dr Reinhold Bichler (Innsbruck University), Dr Simon Haberle (Australian National University), Professor Dr Andreas Lang (University of Liverpool), Professor Dr Stephen Shennan (University College of London), and Professor Dr Helle Vandkilde (Aarhus University) were informed about the proceedings within the school. Open Seminar in Lund
On May 28th, Archaeologists from Kiel, England and Denmark met their fellow researchers in Lund (Sweden) for the open Seminar "Neolithic Transitions".

The European Megalithic Studies Group Meeting 2010 in Kiel provided an excellent frame for fruitful discussions.
Next generation of PhD students welcomed
The second generation of graduate students have started their projects in Kiel. The introductory workshop offered a good opportunity for old and new members of the school to get in touch.

Marble experts in Kiel - Workshop at the Graduate School
"Marble is quite an specific field of research", Natalia Toma admits. Toma, PhD student at the GS, has organized the interdisciplinary workshop "Marble – Change – Landscape". More than 20 mostly young scientists from Germany, France, Great Britain, Israel, Italy Austria and the USA met in Kiel from April 15 to 17.
European Megalithic Studies Group Meeting
From 13th to 15th of May 2010 the European Megalithic Studies Group will meet in Kiel. It is invited by the Graduate School, the Priority Program "Early Monumentality and Social Differentiation (SPP1400)", the RGK of the German Archaeological Institute (DAI) and the Insitute of Pre- and Protohistoric Archaeology of the CAU Kiel. This years´ meeting will deal with the topic of "Megaliths and Identities". Along with the workshop there will be public lectures on Megalithic Studies. The participants of the Megalithic Studies Group will also attend the workshop of the Priority Program from 16th th to 17th th of May in Kiel.

The Graduate School “Human Development in Landscapes" at the Christian Albrechts-University in Kiel, Germany, invites applications for 30 Doctoral stipends for outstanding young researchers. International Course on ArchaeoGeophysics - INCA 2009
The II International Course on ArchaeoGeophysics took place from July 18th. until August 1st. in Nitra, Slovakia and counted with the participation of some members and staff of the Graduate School as Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Rabbel, Dr. Christoph Rinne, Michael Teichmann and Florian Bauer. The course is a joint project of the Comenius University of Bratislava in Slovakia, the University of Kiel in Germany and the Kocaeli University in Turkey with financial support of the European Union.

2,6 million euros for Priority Programme "Monumentality and Early Social Differentiation"
The University of Kiel coordinates the newly established Priority Programme "Monumentality and Early Social Differentiation" funded by the DFG (German Research Foundation) with 2,6 million euros. In this new Neolithic programme, scientists from 10 different institutions, including many investigators of the Graduate School, work together in an interdisciplinary way to research the emergence of monumental structures in northern Germany and its relationship with new social processes and structures. Schleswig-Holstein State provides starting funds for the Geoinformation Centre at the University of Kiel
We congratulate Prof. Dr. Rainer Duttmann, one of the Principal Investigators at the Graduate School, and Dr. Ulrike Klein, who are initiators of the newly installed Geoinformation Centre. This centre at the University of Kiel has received a starting fund of 1,2 million Euro from the Schleswig Holstein State. More information here (in German).
