Psychiatrie und psychische Krankheit als Themen des Films

Die Medienwissenschaft / Kiel: Berichte und Papiere erscheint unregelmäßig. Ihr erstes Interesse besteht darin, filmographische und bibliographische Hilfsmittel zugänglich zu machen. Sie enthält darüber hinaus Literatur- und Forschungsberichte und dokumentiert einzelne Projekte Kieler Medienwissenschaftler.

Eine annotierte Bibliographie

Die Geschichte der Psychiatrie und der psychischen Krankheit im Film ist so alt wie das Kino. Der Film hat erzählt von Trauer und vom Zusammenbruch, von der amour fou und von der Schuld, von einer Kreativität am Rande der Ruhelosigkeit und der Bewußtheit, von größenwahnsinnigen Politikern und von mad scientists. Erzählt wurde von Anstalten, die Gefängnissen gleichkamen, von verrückt gewordenen Psychiatern, von Gummizellen und Elektroschock-Therapien. Der Wahnsinn wurde in metaphorischer Weise als Symbol gesetzt, an dem ablesbar ist, wie zerstörerisch die Gesellschaft für ihre Mitglieder werden kann. Es gab aber auch vor allem dokumentarische Versuche, die den Kranken als Gesprächspartner ernst nahmen und der Utopie einer freien Psychiatrie zuarbeiteten. Und es gab immer wieder Filme, die vom Wunder der menschlichen Zuwendung erzählten, von der Bereitschaft zu retten und zu helfen. Es gibt kein eigenes Genre des Psychiatriefilms - vielmehr kann der Wahnsinn in alle Genres einbrechen, findet sich in der Komödie wie im Melodrama, im Gangsterfilm wie im weepie. Die Normalität der Handelnden und des Handelns erweist sich als stillschweigende Grenze, die jederzeit überschritten werden kann.

Die Geschichte der Psychiatrie im Film ist aber auch eine Geschichte der Ängste und der Abwehrreaktionen, mit denen über die Jahre und Jahrzehnte der psychischen Abweichung begegnet wurde. Der Film schließt an alte Traditionen an: Über Jahrhunderte hinweg wurde der Kranke in den Entwürfen der "Volkspsychologie" als ein Fremder aufgefaßt, der eine möglicherweise unabsehbare Gefahr für die anderen darstelle. Gerade in der Kritik der Psychiatrie als Ordnungsmacht zeigt sich das kritische Potential des Films - immer wieder ist das Recht des Menschen auf Schmerz und Psychose behauptet, immer wieder für Verständnis und Toleranz für die Andersartigkeit der Kranken und für Hilfe für die Geistigbehinderten geworben worden.

Diese Bibliographie versammelt Arbeiten zur Geschichte der Psychiatrie im Film sowie eine Reihe von Analysen, in denen das Thema in einzelnen Filmen untersucht wird. Nicht berücksichtigt wurden

• Arbeiten zum Themenkreis Traum und Film; vgl. dazu die Bibliographie in Casebier/Casebier 1980 sowie den Überblicksartikel in Petric 1981; eine neue Bibliographie zum Thema ist in der Medienwissenschaft / Kiel: Berichte und Papiere (8, 1999) erschienen;

• alle Nachbarthemen wie Alkoholismus und Drogenabhängigkeit im Film, Selbstmord, psychosoziale Aspekte der Homosexualität im Film usw. wurden ausgespart;
• ebensowenig fanden Untersuchungen zur strukturellen Äquivalenz von Strukturen der psychischen Störung und des Films Aufnahme;

• Der Wahnsinn der Bergmanschen Charaktere ist in ihrer Umgebung gespiegelt. Psychische Krankheit entfaltet in Bergmans Filmen ein metaphorisches Potential, hat aber große realistische Qualitäten. Die Grenze zwischen Normalität und Wahnsinn ist unscharf, wird immer immer wieder überschritten, oft mit fatalen Konsequenzen. Gelegentlich scheint die Krankheit zum Geheimnis deklariert zu werden, zu dem es keinen Weg der Entschlüsselung gibt.

• The film dealing with psychiatry and mental illness has generally, accurately reflected ist times. When mental illness was an exotic condition, chracterized by extreme symptoms, and when psychiatrists were relatively unfamiliar figures on the cultural landscape, movies tended to present symptoms and therapists as larger than life. As mental illness and ist treatment have become more accepted, the sick person and his therapist become more human, less magical and frightening and less likely to represent peaks or valleys of behavior (76).
