The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, University Hospital of Schleswig-Holstein, Campus Kiel, is directed by Prof. Dr. Joachim Hassenpflug, MD.

Prof. Hassenpflug is a member of the presendential board of national societies for orthopaedic surgery, and an editorial board member of numerous orthopaedic journals.

The department offers a comprehensive portfolio of musculo-skeletal services to the local community, Germany and beyond. Our department offers highly specialized surgical and conservative treatment in different subspecialties of orthopaedics, including arthroplasty, oncology, trauma, hand, spine, foot, ankle and pediatric surgery. Overall the primary infection and complication rate of our procedures is very low. The Orthopaedic Department provides an opportunity to gain a well rounded education for physicians.

The service for hip and knee arthritis and arthrology is directed by the head of the Orthopaedic Department, Prof. Hassenpflug. Primary hip and knee replacement, as well as repeated operations of failed joint prosthetics and septic bone and joint diseases, are performed highly specialized. The survival rate of hip prosthetics was documented to be 98 % after 10 years from the Orthopaedic Department Kiel.

Joint preserving osteotomies in joint and limb deformities are an additional speciality. For example corrections of knee deformities are performed with highly sophisticated computer assistance by means of a navigation-system. Clinical outcome-studies have shown a long lasting success for our patients.
Endoscopic surgery is performed on the knee, ankle, shoulder and ellbow joint.

As part of the Department of Orthopaedics the Pediatric Orthopaedics Unit diagnoses and treats the entire range of problems affecting the immature musculoskeletal system. Subspecialties include problems of pediatric spine, foot and hip, birth defects and abnormalties. Another specialization is the treatment of limb and joint deformities.

Bone- and soft tissue tumors are diagnosed in collaboration with the departments of pediatric and medical oncology. The department of pathology, which is a center of excellence in this field, also works in tight collaboration with us.

The clinic performs a well differentiated protocol for the correction of foot-deformities including ankle arthroplasties and correction of hindfoot and forefoot deformities.

Spinal surgery is a well established subspecialty. The service specialises in initial evaluations and treatment of disc disease and herniations, spinal stenosis, fractures, tumors, inflammatory conditions, myelopathy, radiculopathy, infections, failed back surgery and spinal deformities including severe scoliosis and kyphosis. Minimal invasive procedures in osteoporotic fractures with vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty are also well established.

The bone bank of the Orthopaedic Department provides allografts for the use in joint reconstruction after prosthetic failure and tumor resection.

The Orthopaedic Department itself includes three different wards as well as an outpatient clinic.

The recently renovated one- or two-bed rooms have a hotel-like atmosphere. In every room there is a shower-toilette-facility as well as an individual closet, a television (including Arabian stations broadcast), a telephone and internet-access. The ward offers a lounge, a library and flat-screen TV.

The department of physiotherapy is closely integrated in the postoperative care of our patients. The highly specialised physiotherapist aids the patient out of bed after an operation with the help of crutches or a walker. The early exercises and mobilization of the operated joint will help the patient recover and resume daily activities as soon as possible.

Our research unit is comprised of a biomechanic research laboratory as well as research groups for musculo-skeletal cell biology. Another group studies the influence of coordinative and proprioceptive ability for the prevention of sports-related injuries. The research groups have received several national and international awards in the past and underline the excellence in health-care services and research of the Orthopaedic Department.
