At the end of a year that was in many respects very eventful, Kiel University will be exiting its 350th jubilee with a big THANK YOU. After Christmas, posters across Kiel will be passing on the messages that the state university stands for today, as a "final official act" for the jubilee. The thank you campaign, which is being supported by Ströer Deutsche Städte Medien GmbH, is one of the joint projects for the jubilee year with over 35 cooperating partners plus numerous committed university members. Professor Lutz Kipp, President of Kiel University, is absolutely sure that "the unbelievable diversity and variety that was present in the jubilee year would not have been possible without these joint campaigns and the fantastic support throughout the city and state!"

On 16 January 2014, exactly 350 days before the start of the year of celebrations, the first plans for the university's 350th jubilee were revealed. The jubilee team went to work with lots of dates and a great deal of ambition. Members of the university, students and employees, companies, the media and institutes were successfully persuaded to join in. Famous support was gained in the form of Minister-President Torsten Albig as patron and Lord Mayor Dr. Ulf Kämpfer as ambassador. The first projects came to life, such as a Christian-Albrechts-Secco, the '350+ marks' campaign or a casting audition to find the founding figures “Christian Albrecht” and “Christine”. "2014 was also symbolised by a great deal of brain-racking - thinking about concepts for exhibitions, book projects and new event formats", said jubilee project managers Dr. Boris Pawlowski and Anne Waller, when they look back to when the plans began.

The actual jubilee year began at the start of 2015. "From the very beginning, and throughout the entire year, we wanted as many people as possible from the university and the state to be able to take part and join in. That was our aim, and that was what we achieved", emphasized Pawlowski and Waller. Over 2,000 individual events and activities spoke for themselves. For example, around 3,000 people took part in the jubilee quiz on 1 January 2015. The next public attractions were not far behind - a fully booked jubilee ball, a packed jubilee fair and the first of 24 jubilee exhibitions took place in the spring. This was followed by the release of our own jubilee stamp by the Deutsche Bundespost and the Federal Ministry of Finance, faculty conferences, a tower race - which was completely sold out within an incredible 48 hours, or the campus festival with approximately 15,000 visitors and accompanying student festival. "What a year" summed up Kipp, whose personal highlights included the Purple Night with the association Die Holtenauer e.V., or the ceremony in the Offene Kirche St. Nikolai, with its royal guest.

The end was by no means in sight at the celebrations for the foundation anniversary on 5 October 2015. The commemorative publication, which had been released previously, was presented to the public in the form of a lecture series. Top-class scientific conferences or the Annual Meeting of the Chancellors of German Universities were organised to celebrate Kiel University's notable anniversary. Right up to the end of the year and, in the case of the numerous lecture series and exhibitions, even continuing beyond 2015, the 350th jubilee is ever present. Just yesterday (Thursday 17 December), those involved in a student jubilee project presented their results on student protest culture.

"This festival year has really been worthy of its title. Partners welcomed us with open arms. The members of the university contributed incredible ideas and personal commitment. This jubilee bore beautiful and sometimes also surprising blossoms, which allow our university to be seen in a whole new light one year later. We have confidently shown who we are, what we are capable of and what we believe in. We will remember this year for a long time to come", is Kipp's satisfied conclusion. A final thank you to all those involved and all the supporters is therefore very important to the whole university.
