Kiel University Wins with a Convincing Strategy for International Alumni Work

30,000 Euros in prize money from the competition “Researcher Alumni Strategies”

The decision on the winners in the “Researcher Alumni Strategies” competition of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation is in. Kiel University (CAU) is among the successful applicants, whose strategy for future researcher alumni will be supported with a grant of 30,000 Euros. CAU will focus first on building up international partnerships in the marine sciences, primarily in the USA, Canada and China. A further focus in Kiel will be on establishing exchange opportunities for young researchers as well as guest scientists.

“Collaborations with foreign universities represent an important basis for the establishment of international activities at Kiel University. One of the key tasks of our internationalization strategy is thus to evaluate and strengthen existing partnerships while at the same time establishing new fruitful contacts”, explains Professor Gerhard Fouquet, President of Kiel University. “International CAU alumni are important ambassadors for promoting a university where they themselves have spent some time doing research”, adds Vice President Frank Kempken, responsible for the internationalization strategy of the state university.

In existing alumni networks up to now researchers have played a lesser role. At Kiel University they will be more systematically included in future, to foster enthusiasm for Kiel especially in excellent young scientists from abroad. The Cluster of Excellence “The Future Ocean” will establish a special “Researcher Alumni Network” in marine sciences for this purpose. “We want to systematically approach international scientists now and prepare them for their role as alumni,” says Dr. Gesche Braker, Coordinator of the Integrated Marine Postdoc Network (IMAP) of the ocean cluster. “We know that important impulses for cutting edge research result from an active postdoc network. We want to use this potential for the marine sciences and for Kiel University.”

The competition “Researcher Alumni Strategies” is the follow-up program to the ideas competition “Researcher Alumni of German Universities” and addresses systematic research alumni work more directly. It is part of the “International Marketing” project, carried out jointly by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, the German Academic Exchange Service, the German Research Foundation and the Fraunhofer Gesellschaft. The project is financed by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research. It is part of the “Research in Germany” initiative.
