Articles on the re-establishment of Kiel University after 1945 published

Kiel University (CAU) is 350 years old this year. From its long life, seven decades have still even passed since 1945. Within these 70 years, the face of Schleswig-Holstein's state university has changed considerably. The massive increase in the number of students, the extension of the scientific members of staff, building developments as well as new subjects and study structures have transformed what was once a university controlled by tenured faculty from the 17th century into the 'mass' university it is today. The book "Wissenschaft im Aufbruch: Beiträge zur Wiederbegründung der Kieler Universität nach 1945" illuminates this phase of Kiel's university history, which can by all means be used as a symbol for the awakening of the CAU after 1945. On Wednesday, 11 March, Christoph Cornelißen, the publisher, presented this book in Kiel.

"The book describes the development of the CAU into a mass university from a variety of interesting perspectives", expressed Kiel's Head of Cultural Affairs, Wolfgang Röttgers. It is also no coincidence that the book also appeared in the series of publications by the Gesellschaft für Kieler Stadtgeschichte (Association for Kiel's History), published by Dr Jürgen Jensen: "The scientists at Kiel University are always our most important partners as authors for the series of publications by the Gesellschaft für Kieler Stadtgeschichte." The President of Kiel University, Professor Lutz Kipp, accordingly thanked the publisher and all those involved for their articles: "The book is a valuable and important contribution to our efforts for a reflection of our history in the jubilee year, which may also be self-critical."

The publication is the first step, which should be followed by others, Cornelißen expressed. He was a Professor of Recent and Modern History at Kiel University from 2003 to 2011, and today he works at Goethe University Frankfurt. Projects such as updating the Kieler Gelehrtenverzeichnis (Kiel Directory of Scholars) or the commemorative publication for the 350th anniversary of Kiel University can provide further information about such things as study behaviour and everyday life as a student after 1945, or which relationships developed between the Land Capital Kiel and its university over the past seven decades.

The historian continued to express how the volume offers a first orientation for subjects such as Historical Sciences, Political Science and Art History for the time since 1945: "It contains articles on the re-establishment of Kiel University after 1945, as well as its transformation until into the 1970s. The critical discussion with selected individuals such as the former CAU professors Karl Dietrich Erdmann and Michael Freund breaks historical events down to the individuals involved."
