EU funds Project on Urban Dynamics at Kiel University
The European Union (EU) program “strategic partnerships” which aims at the internationalization of universities funds the project „Urban dynamics: Global Perspectives for Socio-cultural Urban Management“ of Kiel University (CAU) with 235,000 euros. Headed by Prof. Dr. Javier Gómez-Montero of the Institute of Romance Studies and Prof. Dr. Rainer Wehrhahn of the Department of Geography, the project starts in October 2015 with the objective to expand the intercultural competencies of university graduates in urban professional fields.
“We give students the opportunity to participate at long-term interdisciplinary urban research and to gain intercultural practical experiences in urban contexts“, project manager Victor Ferretti explains. Various learning activities support students’ international mobility, and multilingual competencies enable free access to innovative, validatable education materials. Students of Kiel University and students of partner universities in Recife, Buenos Aires, Paris und Santiago elaborate joint case studies by means of a blended-learning platform. Among other things, an international online lecture series will provide content of teaching.
A summer school and a concluding start-up academy will serve to move forward international networking of urban social entrepreneurship. Internships abroad are part of the curriculum, too. To do so, the project management already arranged cooperations with partner institutions from city administration, business and the services sector.
In order to provide proper formation in the field of socio-cultural urban management for young practitioners, the project teams forms part of an interdisciplinary and transnational network. Besides two further European partners – Universidade de Santiago de Compostela and Université Paris 8 –, the Latin American Universidad del Salvador in Buenos Aires and Universidade Federal de Pernambuco in Recife are part of the network. These five universities are characterized by complementary social and cultural science as well as geographical expertise through multiple cooperations with city-regional professional stakeholders.
Bundling geographical and socio-cultural urban competencies in an international team allows giving answers to current challenges. „Today, economical crises increase the risk of social divides, and political conflicts provoke growing migration streams. Our project wants to react to these tendencies in terms of managing urban dynamics“, co-project manager Corinna Hölzl emphasizes.
On 1st of October 2015, the two-year project starts with a kick-off meeting and a press conference in Santiago de Compostela.
