Kiel University brings TEDx Conference back to the city!

Students and doctoral candidates at Kiel University have once again managed to obtain the sought-after licence for a conference in the form of the internationally-renowned TEDx. On 3 December the now second edition of the English-language conference will take place in Kiel under the motto "Dreams vs. Realities". Speakers from Kiel University, Kiel and the surrounding area will be presenting their innovative ideas and projects under the "TEDxKielUniversity" label. Last year the team of volunteers were able to bring inspiring and personal talks from a wide spectrum of topics to the stage. There was a trip to Mars, for example, or a connection between art and science, or a plea for more humane cooperation at work. The team also obtained internationally renowned speakers for the premičre of this type of conference in Kiel, such as the story activist Mary Alice Arthur, or the British author and TV host Martin Dorey.

The Kiel-based TEDxlers have also received a licence for four so-called "TEDx Salons": these are smaller events at which talks recorded at other TED conferences are shown on a given topic and discussed afterwards. The "TEDxKielUniversitySalons” are being organised by participants of the "Creating a TEDx Event“ module at Kiel University's Key Skills Centre (ZfS). This makes Kiel University one of the few universities worldwide offering students such an opportunity.

More information on the second TEDxKielUniversity conference, the topics of the TEDxKielUniversitySalons, the event locations and registration details will follow in the coming weeks.

About TEDx, x = independently organized event
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized. (Subject to certain rules and regulations.)

About TED
TED is a nonprofit organization devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading, usually in the form of short, powerful talks (18 minutes or fewer) delivered by today's leading thinkers and doers. Many of these talks are given at TED's annual conference in Vancouver, British Columbia, and made available, free, on TED.com. TED speakers have included Bill Gates, Jane Goodall, Elizabeth Gilbert, Sir Richard Branson, Nandan Nilekani, Philippe Starck, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Sal Khan and Daniel Kahneman.

TED's open and free initiatives for spreading ideas include TED.com, where new TED Talk videos are posted daily; the Open Translation Project (www.ted.com/pages/287), which provides subtitles and interactive transcripts as well as translations from thousands of volunteers worldwide; the educational initiative TED-Ed (ed.ted.com); the annual million-dollar TED Prize (www.tedprize.org), which funds exceptional individuals with a "wish", or idea, to create change in the world; TEDx (www.ted.com/tedx), which provides licenses to thousands of individuals and groups who host local, self-organized TED-style events around the world; and the TED Fellows (www.ted.com/fellows) program, which selects innovators from around the globe to amplify the impact of their remarkable projects and activities.
