Claudia Ricarda Meyer will become Kiel University’s first female chancellor

Kiel University has a new chancellor: Claudia Ricarda Meyer will officially begin her duties as the administrative head of Schleswig-Holstein’s state university on 1 May. President of Kiel University, Professor Lutz Kipp, congratulated his new University Board colleague on Wednesday 18 January on her decision in favour of the university: “I am very happy that we have been able to get such a qualified candidate in Claudia Ricarda Meyer for this important position, and I am looking forward to working with her.” Until the new chancellor begins her duties, the head of Finance and Reporting, Ulf Holst, will continue to manage the affairs. “Ulf Holst has reliably headed our administration over the past months. We are very grateful to him for this,” Kipp praised the temporary chancellor.

Claudia Ricarda Meyer (45) was previously head of university administration and university development at Leuphana University of Lüneburg. After her degree in Applied Cultural Sciences in Lüneburg, she completed complementary studies in “Academic Management” at the German University of Administrative Sciences in Speyer. Since 2000, the new chancellor has been involved in various functions at Leuphana University of Lüneburg and supervised projects such as founding the privately funded university and fusing two universities. “As chancellor, I want to be the mediator between academia and administration. We want to create a motivational environment for all university members. This requires a joint understanding above and beyond the university’s targets. I want to work on this and contribute towards the university’s further successful development,” said Meyer.

The chancellor is elected for a 6 year term. She heads the university administration and is the budget officer. In Kiel, she completes the five-person University Board under President Professor Lutz Kipp and the Vice Presidents Professor Ilka Parchmann, Professor Anja Pistor-Hatam and Professor Karin Schwarz. Great tasks await the new chancellor at Kiel University: Schleswig-Holstein’s state university is currently involved in four applications for federal funding amounting to millions of Euros, as part of the excellence strategy, which it will use to maintain and expand its status as an international research university. At the same time, it is also facing one of the longest restoration phases of its history.
