Podium discussion at the Hannover Messe: "Cutting-edge research as an innovation driver in Germany"
More and more technical and social innovations come from the creative environment of colleges, universities and research institutions. On Tuesday 25 April at 5pm Professor Lutz Kipp, President of Kiel University (CAU), will discuss "cutting-edge research as an innovation driver in Germany” with a panel of experts at the Hannover Messe. At the CAU booth in Hall 2, "Research & Technology", Sophia Hatzelmann of the Verband deutscher Unternehmerinnen e.V., the State Secretary for Science and Research in Berlin, Steffen Krach, and Jean-François Ricci, Campus Development Manager at the EPFL in Lausanne, Switzerland, together with CAU President Kipp, will elaborate on how the ideal interaction between science, industry and politics can succeed in promoting innovation and employment. The event is free of charge for visitors to the Hannover Messe.
“The small and medium-sized enterprises were and are the most important innovation drivers of the German economy. We need better contact and an unbureaucratic transfer between cutting-edge research and small and medium-sized enterprises. This is the only way these companies will remain the key to the economy’s success in Germany in the future," emphasised Sophia Hatzelmann, STEM officer of the Verband deutscher Unternehmerinnen (VdU).
For Steffen Krach, State Secretary for Science and Research in Berlin, "the excellence competition has triggered great dynamic in the science system as a whole." With the concept “Brain City Berlin”, science and research are becoming even more clearly the hallmark of Berlin - as an expression of the city’s ability to perform and the innovative knowledge metropolis of Berlin.
The external perspective in the discussion is provided by Jean-François Ricci, Campus Development Manager of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne (EPFL): "Science and technology play an increasingly important role for the economic development of regions. They are becoming more and more complex and increasingly global. An international culture is required to relentlessly push the limits of fundamental knowledge on which innovation is based today. Science is global in essence."
“In order to continue pursuing the excellence strategy of the federal government and states successfully, it is important for us to know what expectations business and politics have of the science system. This special event offers a very good opportunity for this," said CAU President Kipp, inviting all those interested to attend the discussion at the Kiel booth.
