Science contributes significantly to economic and social development in the state. From 23 to 27 April at the Hannover Messe, Kiel University (CAU) and its partners will showcase the innovative strength of the research and industrial location, Schleswig-Holstein. "After the successful appearance last year, we are delighted that this time round we have four strong partners at our side, with the state, the Business Development and Technology Transfer Corporation of Schleswig-Holstein (WTSH), KiWi GmbH (Kiel’s Business and Structural Development Agency) and the European XFEL. Under the motto "WAYS TO SOLUTIONS", at the world's largest industrial trade show, we will present excellent CAU research and its contribution to innovation and prosperity," announced University President Professor Lutz Kipp on Monday 12 February in Kiel.

Schleswig-Holstein Day with Minister-President Daniel Günther

On 250 square meters in Hall 2 (Research & Technology), the four partners will jointly promote the scientific and industrial location of Schleswig-Holstein, with a range of presentations, lectures and exhibits relating to the topics of research, knowledge transfer, patents and start-up initiatives. For the first time, there will be a Schleswig-Holstein Day at the Hannover Messe on Monday 23 April. "I am delighted that the state is hosting a reception on the opening day of the trade show at the CAU booth, with the theme 'Business meets Science - Science meets Business'. Many innovative ideas and technologies are developed in Schleswig-Holstein. We therefore have every reason to confidently present ourselves at the world's largest industrial trade show," said Minister-President Daniel Günther. Dr Bernd Bösche, Managing Director of the WTSH, added: "It is an important task of the WTSH to encourage targeted networking and cooperation between companies and universities. Such cooperation brings tangible benefits for both sides. We would like to make this clear to the industry using selected examples, together with the CAU, at the Hannover Messe."

Kiel Solutions at the Hannover Messe

On Thursday 26 April, KiWi will spend a day at the trade show with businesspeople, entrepreneurs and young professionals from the future-orientated sectors of industry and the digital economy. In the afternoon, under the motto "Kiel Solutions", the business location of Kiel will present itself at the CAU booth in all its diversity: from global market leader, to successful examples of knowledge transfer from universities to industry, right through to innovative product developments and future-orientated quarters. "From research into business, from innovation to the market, from the idea to the product. Side by side, we will showcase the strengths and the innovative force of the scientific and business location Kiel," said a delighted Werner Kässens, Managing Director of KiWi, about the joint appearance. With a unique mix of networking and inspiration at the trade show, existing contacts will be strengthened and new contacts made. "The simple and effective idea is to connect companies, entrepreneurs, innovative quarters, universities, young people and institutions with each other. You just have to do it. Exactly like this," Kässens praised the CAU initiative.

European XFEL offers companies cooperation options

The European XFEL is a new international research facility of superlatives, providing ultrashort and ultrahigh-brilliance X-ray laser flashes that will enable completely new opportunities for science. With its cutting-edge technology, the world’s largest X-ray free-electron laser will not only open up areas of research that scientists could only previously dream of, but it will also spearhead innovation for industrial applications. The European XFEL GmbH, the non-profit company that operates the facility, has a workforce of over 300 employees from more than 40 countries. 12 partner countries are currently contributing to the European XFEL. With construction and commissioning costs of 1.22 billion Euros (2005 price levels) and a total length of 3.4 km, the European XFEL is one of the largest and most ambitious European research facilities to date. More information on the facility can be found on our website: www.xfel.eu

The goal of the European XFEL is to enable basic science at the forefront as well as innovation of new technologies. The European XFEL is participating in the Hannover Messe to encourage the involvement of industry in our research. This cooperation can take several forms: for example, companies can be industrial users, doing research using the European XFEL's unique suite of instruments and top experts in various basic research fields; or they can develop new, alternative marketable uses for technologies created during the construction of the facility. Possible cases include developing smart energy grid components, studying novel materials for aerospace, investigating new compounds for pharmaceuticals, and expanding the potential of computing power and storage—all performed with tools exclusively available at the European XFEL. Read about the potential impacts of the European XFEL on industry in the Science section of our website (www.xfel.eu/science) or speak with our Industrial Liaison Office.

Detailed information about the opportunities for industrial use and developed technology transfer will be presented alongside those of other large basic science facilities and institutions that can offer the industry special opportunities to innovate. Attendees will also be able to speak directly with the European XFEL Industrial Liaison Office at the event.
