Kiel University says thank you for a successful year of celebrations
At the end of a year that was in many respects very eventful, Kiel University will be exiting its 350th jubilee with a big THANK YOU. After Christmas, posters across Kiel will be passing on the messages that the state university stands for today, as a "final official act" for the jubilee. The thank you campaign, which is being supported by Ströer Deutsche Städte Medien GmbH, is one of the joint projects for the jubilee year with over 35 cooperating partners plus numerous committed university members. Professor Lutz Kipp, President of Kiel University, is absolutely sure that "the unbelievable diversity and variety that was present in the jubilee year would not have been possible without these joint campaigns and the fantastic support throughout the city and state!"

Music creates a space in which we encounter our emotions and are able to understand and organise them. On Sunday evening (15 November) around 80 guests used this opportunity in Kiel University's Zoological Museum. The occasion was the première of the piece "Tanzendes Meer", by the Taiwan-Austrian composer Shih, which the Kiel Opera presented the university with as a gift for its 350th birthday, as a small musical homage to Kiel Marine Sciences.

Alma Mater Chiloniensis, Kiel's university, was founded with a ceremony at Nikolaikirche (Church of St Nicholas) on Monday, 5 October 1665. Soon after, the university took on the name of its founder and has since been known as Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel (CAU). After 350 years of eventful history, Kiel University celebrated its anniversary today (Monday 5 October 2015), returning to the place of its foundation for a ceremony at Offene Kirche St. Nikolai. Around 700 guests from the worlds of politics, industry, society and academia attended the ceremony at Kiel University's invitation. Among them were Schleswig Holstein's regional bishop Gerhard Ulrich, Schleswig-Holstein's Minister-President Torsten Albig and Her Royal Highness Princess Benedikte of Denmark, as well as 26 representatives of Kiel University's 15 international partner universities.

It is a great tradition to honour an anniversary with a worthy publication. This tradition is to be upheld twice for Kiel University's 350th anniversary. From today (Thursday, 1 October) two publications will tell the story of the foundation of what was once the Fürstenschule zu Bordesholm (Bordesholm Latin school) and its development into a modern state university. Together at Kiel City Hall, Kiel University, the City of Kiel and the publishing house Wachholtz Verlag (Kiel) presented the commemorative publication "350 Jahre Wirken in Stadt, Land und Welt" (350 years of impact on the city, region and world) as well as the annotated first translation of the Latin brochure "Chilonium. Novus Holsatiae Parnassus" (Kiel, Holstein's new Parnassus), which dates from the university's foundation year 1665.

► Kiel University celebrates its 350th anniversary
On October 5, Kiel University will be celebrating its founding day 350 years ago. Around 700 guests from across the world are anticipated, including Her Royal Highness Princess Benedikte of Denmark. From today, September 8, all current and former members of Kiel University, students as well as employees, are invited to take part in the raffle of 35 tickets for the ceremony. The drawing of the tickets ends on September 13. The ceremony will also be broadcasted live into the main lecture hall of Kiel University (Audimax).

From 22 to 25 July, the Kiel Gustav Radbruch Network for Philosophy and Ethics of the Environment (Gustav-Radbruch-Netzwerk) is inviting both scientists and interested members of the public to join in an active discussion.

Farm festival on 5 July
Lindhof is an organic experimental farm, part of the Institute of Crop Science and Plant Breeding at Kiel University. On Sunday, 5 July, interested guests are invited to an open day. This year's key area of focus is research projects on the topic of "Agriculture and Climate Change".

From 12 noon to 7 pm both young and old are welcome to discover the diversity of the state university in three festival areas along Olshausenstraße. »On this day we are going to join with the general public, members of the university and all the university’s alumni in a relaxed and friendly birthday party« stated Professor Lutz Kipp, President of the university. He went on to emphasise that »Everybody from all around are warmly invited to come along and experience the many different sides to the university. This day is also a wonderful opportunity for all alumni and alumnae to visit and rediscover their Alma Mater again.«

170 runners took part in Kiel University's first ever tower race today (Wednesday, 22 April). After 14 floors they were rewarded with a panorama view across Kiel and a medal. "A complete success!" was the conclusion made by the President of Kiel University, Professor Lutz Kipp.

Kiel University (CAU) is 350 years old this year. From its long life, seven decades have still even passed since 1945. Within these 70 years, the face of Schleswig-Holstein's state university has changed considerably. The massive increase in the number of students, the extension of the scientific members of staff, building developments as well as new subjects and study structures have transformed what was once a university controlled by tenured faculty from the 17th century into the 'mass' university it is today. The book "Wissenschaft im Aufbruch: Beiträge zur Wiederbegründung der Kieler Universität nach 1945" illuminates this phase of Kiel's university history, which can by all means be used as a symbol for the awakening of the CAU after 1945.

This year, Kiel University will celebrate its 350th birthday. For this jubilee a special stamp is issued that will be sold on Monday, March 2, by the German federal post. The public is cordially invited to the first day of sale, from 10am to 6 p.m. in the Kieler Holstentörn.

The university invited and the guests came: almost 600 individuals from society, politics, business, media and science met on Thursday, 29 January, for the Reception on account of the 350th anniversary of Kiel University (CAU). After University President Professor Lutz Kipp welcomed guests to Kiel University's Audimax, Schleswig-Holstein's Minister-President Torsten Albig also gave a welcome address. This was then followed by a lecture on the topic "Location Factor University - Christiana Albertina from a business perspective" by Klaus-Hinrich Vater, President of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Kiel (IHK Kiel).

► Jubilee brings new life to Christian Albrecht and Christine
Time travel of a special kind: Throughout the jubilee year at Kiel University (CAU), its founder, Duke Christian Albrecht, and the female figure from the university crest, widely known as Christine, will be given new life. They will be present at all the important jubilee events and will breathe life to the eventful history of the CAU. Yesterday (Tuesday, 4 November), the Theater Kiel and Kiel University both looked for and discovered the performers for the CAU's founding figures. The best eight applicants presented themselves before a jury consisting of Daniel Karasek (Director of Theater Kiel), Lord Mayor Dr Ulf Kämpfer, CAU Vice President Professor Ilka Parchmann and other members of the university.

In 1665, the Duke of Schleswig-Holstein-Gottorf, Christian Albrecht, founded the state university which carries his name. At this time, just a few years after the Thirty Years' War, people considered peace to be the most valuable thing. And so the inscription "Pax Optima Rerum" received a firm position in the crest of Kiel University (CAU). In the centre of the crest, a female figure holding a palm branch and cornucopia symbolises peace. She is affectionately known as "Christine", after her Alma Mater.
