ISPP Summer School in Kiel (Germany), September 4-10, 2005

Goal | (top)

The major theme of the summer school is to explore the links between collective identity, mobilization and political participation. The summer school is aimed at post-graduate students supervised by members of the Network. One of the main goals is to familiarize students with different theoretical, methodological, and empirical approaches to study the link between collective identity and collective action, and to promote "cross-fertilization". Another important goal is to facilitate contact among young scholars from different countries, encouraging collaborative relationships and research. Please note that, although its emphasis is on "Collective Identities, Protest, and Empowerment", the summer school will also provide ample opportunity for discussing further research interests of the participants.

Summer school participants | (top)

The group of prospective participants consists of around 15 postgraduate students supervised by members of the ESF-network "Identity and Socio-Political Participation". Each member of the Network may send one student (the organizing country may send two students). Completed applications must be received no later than March 1st, 2005. Applications will be reviewed by members of the Network's steering committee. Applicants will be informed whether their application has been approved in May, 2005. The summer school in Kiel is the first in a series of three summer schools organized in conjunction with the ESF Scientific Network. We are therefore specifically interested in applicants who have the capacity and motivation for a three year trajectory (so a core group of students will participate in all three planned summer schools and may collaborate in joint or comparative research).

Summer school structure (overview) | (top)

The summer school combines the following modules:

  • Lectures
At the beginning of the summer school the Senior Teacher presents a broader perspective on the summer school theme. (This lecture will be open to the general public.) In an additional lecture by the Junior teacher a more circumscribed research question is addressed. Individual presentations. To familiarize the group with one's work and ideas, each participant presents his or her project to the other participants (30-minute presentation). Each individual presentation is followed by a discussion (20 minutes) promoting interdisciplinary exchange.
  • Small group projects
A special emphasis of the summer school is on initiating interdisciplinary research cooperation. Building on the discussion of the individual presentations small groups will elaborate on a specific self-chosen research question. The groups' task is to sketch out a research proposal addressing their topic from different theoretical and methodological angles. Groups will pre-sent their proposals to other groups in a concluding session.
  • Individual consultations
Extra time at the end of the summer school is devoted to individual consultations of the participants with the Senior teacher to discuss their research projects and theoretical and methodological issues.
