Politicization of collective Identity

Topic:

The main goal of this research project is to test empirically the social psychological model of politicized collective identity as proposed by Simon and Klandermans (2001). The model contains important conceptual components, which in turn are anchored in established social psychological research traditions (especially in identity, fairness, attribution and protest research), but connects these components in an innovative way. The research program is threefold: 1. examination of the model's assumptions concerning necessary politicization steps, 2. analysis of the role of entrepreneurs of identity and 3. analysis of the interplay of different levels of identity. Four laboratory experiments as well as an extensive field study (questionnaire) with three points of measurement are planned. The field study will be conducted in the context of the politicization of immigrants (ethnic minorities) in Germany. The combination of laboratory experiments and a field study with longitudinal design allows the identification of causal relations as well as cumulative and reciprocal effects.
