The Seal of the University
The University of Kiel bears the name of its founder, Duke Christian Albrecht of Schleswig-Holstein-Gottorf, who established the university for his Duchy in the year 1665 – only seventeen years after the end of the Thirty Years' War.
The Seal also looks back to this time. It depicts a female figure holding a palm branch and a cornucopia filled with wheat, symbolizing peace.
The Seal bears the motto:
Pax optima rerum
(Peace is the greatest good).
