Character of the ETDS

The ETDS is a huge Breitensport tournament in ballroom and latin dances. Couples are judged on an individual basis and will be organized in the three different groups, amateurs, professionals and masters sorted out within a qualification round.
Over 500 dancers from universities in Germany, the Netherlands, Austria, Switzerland and Estonia come together on a periodical basis to the EDTS (which takes place in Kiel this time).
They compete individually as well as they fight for the teams' cup, the Wan-"der" Tanzmaus. We explicitly emphasise the Breitensport character of this tournament. Competition dancers are welcome as well, but their partners will be casted by lots. Those dancers will all start in the open tournament and will not be counted in the Tanzmaus valuation.
But it is not only the competition: besides having fun during all the parties in the evening the ETDS is also a meeting point for all dancers.

We will welcome all dancers and supporting visitors.

Participation

Students and people associated in any way to a university with respect to dancing can participate. Everybody is allowed to dance in either Breitensport or Open in each discipline.

Back

Open rules

Dancers who own (or ever have owned) a so-called starting book (from D-class on) or own an international equivalent are not allowed to dance in the Breitensport section in their discipline. If a dancer is qualified according to the above rules for the open in one discipline only, he/she is allowed to start in the Breitensport in the other discipline. The tournament for the open class is intended for intensively training members of dance clubs or other enthusiastic dancers. The ETDS shouldn' t be regarded as an alternative to club tournaments or the like in order to stand out by brilliant performances at any cost. A blind date partner for the open class is obligatory. In this tournament your open blind date partner will be casted by lots.

ETDS special rule

Every dancer who has reached one of the first three places twice within the masters during the last three tournaments of an ETDS (Dortmund 2007, Berlin 2007, Eindhoven 2006) is blocked for the next two tournaments of an ETDS in this corresponding discipline in the Breitensport section.

The Tournament

A tournament starts with the qualification round for all Breitensport couples. After qualification the starting couples are organized according their results in the corresponding groups: amateurs, professionals, masters. This ensures that each couple will dance at least two rounds.

Judgement and Adjudicators

Notify your team captain if you would like to serve as an adjudicator in a discipline. They should mention your wishes during the registration.

Judging criteria for ballroom and latin dances (valuation per couple):

  1. Music comprises dancing according to the beat and (basic) rhythm as well as the effort of each couple to show that it interprets the music with its movements.
  2. The balance views typical body positions of each single dancer individually and towards each other as well as their coordination in connection with the energy of movement.
  3. Movement comprises correlations based upon the different elements of movements.
  4. Character (of dance and music) considers the historical development of each dance plus everything that the dancer expresses additionally in his effort to interpret music through movement.

These judging criteria are numbered according to their importance, i. e. only if all the couples in one round stick to the beat and rhythm (music) the next criterion listed above is brought into play (balance) and so on.

Tanzmaus rules

In total 6 different tournaments were offered: amateur class, profi class and master class in each discipline Standard and Latin, respectively. We set up the following rules:

  1. In order to gain points a university must have at least 3 persons starting in one of the tournaments above.
  2. Within each countable tournament the mean value of the rankings is calculated.
  3. Blind date couples will contribute with the complete ranking number in each section.
  4. If a university has more than 5 persons in one of these tournaments the worst ranking number will not be taken into account.
  5. Finally the 6 values are summed up and yield the total result.
  6. Grouping of universities with other universities is stepwise allowed up to the total number of 9 participants.
  7. Results from the open tournament will be disregarded.

Example:
In the profi class Ballroom the following participants of "University Tanzhausen" competed and had the following ranking numbers:

Couple University Points
#43: Hannes Slowfox - Bärbel Taktlos Tanzhausen 60
#67: Volker Hüpf - Silvia Quick Swingburg/Tanzhausen 72
#123: Tobias Tango - Tea Pose Tanzhausen 88
#125: Bert Planlos - Gerda Tabzig Tanzhausen/Bouncing 51 (worst result, not counted)

The University Tanzhausen finally receives (60+72+88)/3 = 73,3 points from this tournament. The number 73,3 is one of 6 numbers contributing to the total result.
According to rule 1 it would be sufficient that couples #43 and #67 contribute to the result with (60+72)/2=66 points.
Masters couples will gain points from amateurs and professionals couples, professionals couples will gain points from amateurs couples. According to rule 1 a university with less than three persons in any tournament will receive zero points. This is intended.
