lectures:

Selected lectures on human- and veterinary parasitology, (supplementary arrangement)

Mainly (summer-)season dependant parasites of humans and animals being present in Schleswig-Holstein will be introduced. Attention is also paid on pathogene helminths and arthropods. The aim is to explain their life cycle and transmission ways in order to take possible prophylactic steps on the basis of their biological behaviour.

literature: Textbooks on parasitology; special literature will be presented at the beginning of the lecture

requirements: Zwischenprüfung or Vordiplom

Basic Parasitology (supplementary arrangement)

General view on parasitic forms of life with defined demarcation to other types of animal coassociations. Physiological, morphological, and other adaptations due to the parasitic way of life will be outlined. Different mechanisms of invasion- and evasion-mechanisms will also be discussed under parasitophyletical aspects.

literature: Textbooks on basic parasitology; special literature will be presented at the beginning of the lecture

requirements: Zwischenprüfung or Vordiplom

Arthropods as parasites and vectors of diseases (supplementary arrangement)

Besides the arthropod classes a few annelids and the pentastomids will be presented in their adaptations as parasites and vectors of parasitic diseases and zoonoses. Tropical and subtropical species will be included and advices to clinical appearances and exposition-prophylaxis will be given.

literature: textbooks of parasitology; also presented at the beginning of the lecture

requirements: Zwischenprüfung or Vordiplom

courses:

Exercises in Parasitology (supplementary arrangement)

On behalf dissected hosts and histological specimens parasitological isolation- and dignostic methods will be gathered. Living parasites from hosts or from nature will also be collected outdoors, their specific habitat, their possible intermediate hosts, and their transmission-ways will be explained.

literature: Textbooks on parasitology; special literature will be presented at the beginning of the course

requirements: Zwischenprüfung or Vordiplom

examination: colloquium

excursions:

Parasitology in applied and basical research (supplementary arrangement)

The excursion will get a general idea of basic scientific working (university-instituts) and applied working (Pharma industries) parasitologists in the field of zoology, veterinary. and human medicine. At the same time it will serve to get in touch with a possible future profession field of the accompaning students.

literature: will be supplied during the parasitological exercises

requirements: passing the parasitological exercises

examination: protocols

Zoo-exercises in different european zoological gardens, mainly Germany (supplementary arrangement)

The excursion serves all students being interested in the different types of work in zoos, animal-, and safary-parks. The excursion also gives interesting zoological aspects and because of the possibility of close contact to zoo-directors, it saves the involved students for many in vain applications.

requirements: Zwischenprüfung or Vordiplom

examination: protocols

Parasitological and ecological problems of tropical regions shown for Costa Rica (supplementary arrangement)

The tropical Costa Rica presents a variety of biotopes: from above 3.500m to the coasts of the pacific or atlantic ocean (caribic). Among those are the most distinct the paramo, the rain and cloud forests and the dry forest (e.g. Sta. Rosa). Those biotopes will be visited under the aspect of natural preserve and sustainable developement. Small projcets will deepen the understanding of parasitological phenomena and modes of transmission. At the end aprr. 3 days for own disposure allow to suit own preferences, e.g. to visit plantations, cultural and economical places of interest.

literature: will be presented at the beginning of the accompaning seminary; travel guides

requirements: accompaning seminary; fit for tropics, Zwischenprüfung or Vordiplom

examination: protocols

seminar courses:

Fauna, flora and regional studies of Costa Rica

Reports on special tropical adaptations of invertebrates and vertebrates and their typical environment will demonstrate the urgent need of a sustainable developement and the danger of deforestation. Different ecological regions (e.g. reserved areas) throughout the country will be introduced and transmission ways of parasites outlined as well as reasons for their appearance discussed.

literature: will be distributed at the beginning of the seminary; textbooks on general and tropical parasitology; travel-guide
               through the country

requirements: Zwischenprüfung or Vordiplom

examination: oral report

supervising research:

Supervising scientific papers

Extended essays with topics from parasitology (Pentastomids), taxonomy and from zoological gardens can be supervised. Top priority is laid on organismic zoology with methods of light-and electron microscopy. Ethological studies can be carried out in connection with the zoological garden at Gettorf.

literature: will be discussed

requirements: oral Diploma-examination

examination: Zoology as main subject

Supervising scientific papers

Students being interested in parasitology will given the possibility to take part in small research studies within a time of a term, e. g. epidemiology of ticks, host-parasite-relations of selected animals and pentastomids.

literature: will be discussed

requirements: Zwischenprüfung bzw. Vordiplom in Biologie

examination: protocols
