Current Research Field
Parasitology of free ranging animals
For seven years I have been member of the Parasitology Working Group here at the
University of Kiel.
During this period I took part in parasitological investigations on mainly small mammals.
In one of the projects Dr. Böckeler (Leader of the Parasitology Working Group), Mr Wolf
Pecher (M. Sc.), and I investigated the reasons for the decrease of the population of
hares (Lepus europaeus) in Schleswig-Holstein (North Germany). Among various
reasons, parasites were also thought to be responsible for this phenomenon. None of the
hares showed clinical manifestations (e.g. hairloss or any kinds of athropies). The
weights of parasitized and parasite free hares did not differ significantly. Thus it is
unlikely that parasites were responsible for the decrease of the hare population in
Schleswig-Holstein.
This project was carried out together with Dr. G. Heidemann (Institut für Haustierkunde),
Kiel, and the local Veterinary Research Department. It was supported by the local hunting
association and the local Department for Nutrition, Agriculture and Fishery.
In a second projekt Mr Pecher and I were working on the helminth fauna of Arvicolidae,
Muridae and Soricidae. The aim of this work was to provide a comprehensive list of
helminths of theses animal groups in North Germany and to add to the current understanding
of the epidemiology of the parasites found.
This project was funded and carried out together with the Center for Ecosystem Research at the lakes
of Bornhöved (PZÖ), Kiel, Germany.
Current Research Interest
At the moment I am interested in any kind of parasitological research.
