VPN use from the home office

Dear Sir or Madam, Dear Colleagues,

The current exceptional situation is a challenge for all of us and occasionally requires rethinking or changing our way of working. This also applies to the way of working via VPN mentioned again here. We are currently measuring that an average of 50-75% of our VPN traffic is generated by accessing websites outside of CAU via VPN. We would therefore like to draw your attention once again to the fact that all (!) connections that you create on your end device in the home office run via our VPN infrastructure as soon as you have dialed into the CAU network via VPN. As already shown in our FAQ at  www.rz.uni-kiel.de/en/faq-homeoffice , a number of CAU services, e.g.

  • Mail via mail clients and webmail,
  • the e-learning service OpenOLAT,
  • the CAU public web pages

can also be reached directly from the Internet without VPN.

Please only use VPN access for business purposes to access CAU services that are not publicly available and, in particular, do not start any video streaming or other services from the Internet on a computer that is connected to the VPN tunnel.

With many thanks and best regards,

Holger Marten
