Unbreakable: Fault tolerant DC-DC converter

  • The project will be presented by an exhibit at the CAU booth for the whole fair week.
  • Responable scientist: Prof. Marco Liserre

What is presented?

The exhibit is based on the results of the ERC proof of concept grant "U-Heart" and presents a fault-tolerant DC-DC converter based on a multiwinding transformer. This converter is characterized by high reliability with reduced redundancy.

What is special?

Fault-tolerant operation is typically achieved through redundancy. The innovative approach of the presented architecture is to have a system, which is modular but fully connected through the multi-winding transformer and where its cells can be deactivated and withstand faults.

What are the potentials?

Isolated DC-DC converters are increasingly employed as key components in data center, aerospace and electrical distribution, because of their capability to guarantee controllability and improve system efficiency. The multiwinding based solution enables high reliability and cost saving potentials.
