Annette Barthelt Award for Marine Research 2024

The deadline for the Annette Barthelt-Award 2024 is November 1, 2023.

On March 22, 2024, the Annette Barthelt Prize for Marine Research will be awarded for the 35th time at the Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel (GEOMAR) by the Annette Barthelt-Stiftung e.V. in memory of the terror victims of Djibouti - Annette Barthelt, Marco Buchalla, Hans-Wilhelm Halbeisen and Daniel Reinschmidt.

The award is intended for young scientists in the field of marine research. Young marine scientists from all disciplines can apply for it. The award comes with a prize of 6000 € and is intended to benefit the scientific work of the awardee.

Outstanding scientific work in all disciplines of marine research and maritime technology that is related to German program contributions to marine research activities will be awarded. The papers should be final theses (PhD or Master). They must have been written in connection with a ship expedition (duration at least 1 week) in which the applicant personally participated. The prize may be split. Applicants should not have been older than 30 years at the time of completion of the work. The thesis should not date back more than two years at the time of application.

The Scientific Advisory Board of the Annette Barthelt Foundation decides on the eligibility and merit of the submitted theses. It may appoint specific experts in individual cases. The decision on the awarding of the prize to one or more prize winners is made by a jury with a simple majority. It consists of the members of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Foundation and its Executive Board. The members of the Scientific Advisory Board include representatives of leading marine science institutes in Germany and the Federal Ministry of Education and Research.

Application Process

To apply for the Annette Barthelt Prize for Marine Research, please send in the scientific paper in digital form, a separate abstract, a curriculum vitae outlining the applicants scientific career, and a brief description of the ship expeditions including a statement whether the data obtained will be archived in a publicly accessible database. Furthermore, please send one printout of the work if available.

The documents should be sent to the address on the right by November 1st, 2023.
