CAU application in the “Qualitätsoffensive Lehrerbildung” programme is “excellent”
Recent success for Kiel University (CAU) in a scientific competition: on Thursday 4 October, the Joint Science Conference (Gemeinsame Wissenschaftskonferenz, GWK) of the Federal Government and the Länder decided that 48 projects from 58 universities from all federal states will receive funding in the “Qualitätsoffensive Lehrerbildung” programme, including Kiel University. The “Lehramt mit Perspektive an der Landesuniversität (LeaP@CAU)” initiative to improve teacher training, which has been funded since 2015, was rated “excellent”. It will now receive total funding from 2019 to 2023 of over €3.8 million.
Vice President Professor Ilka Parchmann, who is responsible for teacher training at the CAU, described this continued funding as a “huge success for teacher training in Schleswig-Holstein. In the last three years, we managed to improve the links between several areas of professional knowledge using research-based modules, together with the subject departments, institutes and partners involved. In addition, we were also able to precisely align skills better with the ultimate ‘school’ field. Our teacher training degree programme has therefore become more specific and more workable in many ways.” CAU President Professor Lutz Kipp added: “Teacher training is an important part of the CAU’s teaching and research offer. The rating of our concept as “excellent” greatly motivates us all to continue along this route in teacher training.”
The Kiel concept placed special emphasis on cross-cutting issues such as inclusion, language and digitalisation. 19 participating subject departments are promoting connections between specialist, didactic and educational knowledge in teacher training at the CAU. This was accompanied by empirical investigations. An information portal for teachers was set up (www.gute-lehre-lehramt.uni-kiel.de) for example, diagnostic, reflective and evaluation instruments for students were further developed, and networks within the CAU and with partners, particularly from the field of school practice, were expanded. In this new phase of funding, the transition from theory to practice should be implemented by including video analyses and simulations, through micro-teaching formats up to continuous consultation and reflection across all practical phases in schools.
Since 2015, the Federal Government and the Länder have been supporting adaptation in teacher training with their “Qualitätsoffensive Lehrerbildung” (Teacher Training Quality Campaign). All universities in Germany that offer teacher training were able to submit funding concepts to the “Qualitätsoffensive Lehrerbildung” programme. In these concepts, the universities were to demonstrate how they want to improve the quality of teacher training, how to strengthen the university’s profile and how processes would be supervised and sustainably secured. The states and the universities also commit themselves to ensuring mutual recognition of teacher training coursework and examinations, access to teaching practice, and equal job opportunities for graduate teachers for their type of teaching qualification.
