KMS Membership
Seventy research groups from 26 institutes and seven faculties – the scientists of the Kiel Marine Science (KMS) research focus area contribute to understanding the processes in the ocean and on the coasts as part of their cross-faculty research. Together, researchers from the natural and social sciences develop strategies for the sustainable use and conservation of ocean systems at the interface between humanity and the sea.
Currently, around 150 excellent scientists, employees, and experts contribute to marine scientific research through working groups and the marine science network in Kiel. Additionally, topics researched by KMS members interlink with the other research focus areas of the university: KLS (Kiel Life Science), SECC (Societal, Environmental and Cultural Change), and KiNSIS (Kiel Nano, Surface and Interface Science).

Application for Membership
Kiel Marine Science offers three forms of membership for researchers in Marine and Earth Sciences:
- Full membership
- Associate membership
- Partner membership
The Steering Committee decides on membership applications, with the approval date considered the first day of membership. KMS membership is for a limited time period, which can be further extended by informal application. The process is organised by the KMS Office.
A member can resign at any time by giving notice to the Steering Committee. Exclusion with good cause can be made by determination of the Steering Committee supported by a two-thirds majority of members.
Membership can only be granted by written application. This can be sent in electronic or written form to the Director of KMS (Prof. Dr. Ralph Schneider, Institute for Geosciences) and will also be accepted in the KMS Office..
