Forthefirsttime,the"OlympusGlobalImageoftheYearLifeScienceLightMicroscopyAward"hasbeenannouncedworldwide.Oneof13winnersisDr.HamedRajabi,scientistoftheFunctionalMorphologyandBiomechanicsGroupattheChristian-Albrechts-UniversityofKiel(CAU),withhismicroscopeimageofalocustwing.

Atop-classinternationaljuryofexpertswithrepresentativesfromscienceandtheartsselectedthewinningpicturesfrom400entriesfrom65countriesaccordingtoartisticandopticalaspects,scientificsignificanceandmicroscopicknow-how.HamedRajabiisoneofthewinnerswithan"HonorableMention".Hisphoto"ARoadintheSky"showsthefoldlinesofalocust'srearwing.

Toprotectwingsfromcontaminationanddamage,someinsects,suchaslocusts,haveevolvedfoldablewings."Toinvestigatethematerialcompositionofwingfoldinglines,Iinvestigatedhindwingsofdesertlocustsusingconfocallaserscanningmicroscopy(CLSM).Afterscanning,Iobservedhighportionofresilin,arubber-likeprotein,atthefoldinglines.Thisissupposedtohelpwingfoldingbyenhancingtheirflexibility.Inamedthisphotoas"ARoadintheSky",becauseveinsresembleroadsandspinesonwingmembranelooklikestars",saysHamedRajabiexplaininghismotive.ItwasrecordedwithanLSM700confocallaserscanningmicroscopefromZeiss,whichisavailableintheFunctionalMorphologyandBiomechanicsgroupofRajabi'ssupervisor,ProfessorStanislavGorb.
