Large and small boundaries

Presentation on the topic of immigration society on 28 May

Maximum limits for immigration and external territorial borders - the dispute over immigration society is not only about these ‘large boundaries’. It is also about ‘small boundaries’ like (in)tolerance towards different cultural behaviours or different forms of incorporating immigrants into the majority society. Dr Volker Heins, Professor at the Kulturwissenschaftliches Institut Essen (KWI), will be addressing this topic in his presentation on Tuesday, 28 May, in the State Parliament building. The event is being organised by the Tolerance Research Unit Kiel (KFT) at Kiel University’s Institute of Psychology in cooperation with the State of Schleswig-Holstein’s Anti-Discrimination Agency.

“Professor Volker Heins, as a political scientist, is not only an expert in the structural issues involved in migration policy, but his presentation also raises our awareness of the seemingly small - but no less important - drawing of borders in the context of intercultural relationships,” says Professor Bernd Simon, Head of the KFT. “His perspective and knowledge add to and enrich not just our own social psychological research on tolerance; they also underline the necessity of collaboration between different disciplines when transferring scientific findings into society.”

Volker Heins will be available to answer questions from the audience after his presentation. All interested parties are warmly invited to attend. Registration is required by 16.05. to or phone +49 (0)431/988-1240. Admission is free. The number of places is limited. Please bring your ID card or passport for entry into the State Parliament building. Please let us know whether you need a translation in sign language when you register.
