Inauguration of the new President of Kiel University

Simone Fulda officially takes office on 1 October.

Professor Simone Fulda is the new President of Kiel University (CAU). On Thursday 1 October, the medical doctor and former Vice President of Goethe University Frankfurt officially takes office at Kiel University. The term of office lasts six years. As the first female President and the second woman at the helm of the CAU, Fulda will represent the state university to the outside world and be responsible for the day-to-day business.

The festivities will be led by the Chairperson of the Academic University Senate, Professor Wolfgang J. Duschl. The welcome speeches will be delivered by the Mayor of the state capital Kiel, Dr Ulf Kämpfer, as well as the Chairpersons of the General Student Committee (AStA), Julia Schmidtke and Johnny Schwausch. In addition, the congratulations by Schleswig-Holstein’s Minister President Daniel Günther, as well as international greetings, will be shown as video messages. The keynote speech will be delivered by Schleswig-Holstein's Minister of Education, Karin Prien, before presiding over the oath of office taken by Simone Fulda. The highlight of the event is the inaugural speech by the new President.

Due to the coronavirus pandemic and the mandatory social distancing, participation in person is restricted to a limited number of registered guests. The event will be streamed live on the Internet. On October 1st, Simone Fulda will become the first woman president and thus the second woman at the helm of Kiel University. Karin Peschel was the first female rector of the university from 1992 to 1996.
