Take part in the SEA-EU photo contest at Kiel University. Open to all students.
On October 1st 2020, the first photo contest will start at Kiel University as part of the SEA-EU - European University of the Seas initiative. The competition is open to students of all faculties enrolled at Kiel University. In line with the theme "The Sea and Us", the most beautiful pictures depicting a connection between humans and the sea can be submitted until October 25th. Exciting prizes from local companies and local cultural institutions await the top three contestants. In addition, an exhibition presenting a selection of the best photos is planned at Kiel University and also as part of the CINEMARE international Ocean Film Festival in April 2021.
Joint competition of six European universities
The ERASMUS+ initiative SEA-EU - The European University of the Sea - is one of the new European universities Alliance that has been funded by the European Union since 2019. The aim of these university alliances is to improve study conditions and mobility within Europe and to contribute to the strengthening of European values. Apart from Kiel University, the alliance consists of the Universities of Cádiz (Spain), Brest (France), Gdansk (Poland), Split (Croatia) and Malta. After a successful completion of the first call for applications in 2019, the SEA-EU alliance will create a joint European university campus, starting within the field of marine science.
The photo competition "The Sea and Us", which is being carried out simultaneously by all six partner universities at both local and European level, is intended to reflect the connection of humans and the sea in Europe. All SEA-EU universities have a special relationship with the sea as they are maritime cities with a long cultural and economic tradition. Geographically they also include most European seas.
The goal of the competition is to illustrate the theme "The Sea and Us" from a variety of perspectives. No matter what the exact focus of the picture is – be it sustainability, maritime and cultural heritage or a marine landscape - all pictures showing a connection between humans and the sea are welcome.
Students who wish to participate can submit up to three pictures by October 25th, 2020 (19:00) at the latest. The selection process is organized in several stages. After an internal pre-selection, the best 20 pictures of the Kiel students from all entries will be evaluated by an independent jury of experts from the fields of photography, film, public relations and international cooperation in November. The jury’s decision will be based on the incorporation of the theme as well as the technical and artistic value of the picture.
The best three pictures will be awarded and automatically participate in the final round of the competition at European level. In December, the grand winner will be chosen from the best 18 pictures - three from each of the six SEA-EU universities. The winner will receive a voucher for a trip through Europe worth 350 Euros.
The jury of the SEA-EU photo contest
The SEA-EU project team was able to recruit the director of the CINEMARE Ocean Film Festival Dr. Till Dietsche to be part of the jury. Dr. Till Dietsche, who holds a degree in media studies, launched the international Ocean Film Festival in 2016, which has continuously been growing since then. Due to the Corona Pandemic the festival was cancelled in 2020, but will celebrate its fifth anniversary in April 2021.
Tom Körber works as a freelance journalist and photographer in the fields of landscape, architecture and water sports. His work is known far beyond the borders of Kiel. In 2008 he won the Sven Simon Award for the best sports photo. Especially in the world of sailing, the Berlin native become well known as editor of the Sailing Journal and various customer magazines such as Rolex and AUDI. Nowadays books, calendars, photo workshops and fine art prints are an integral part of his work.
Jury member Dr. Elisabeth Grunwald from the International Center of Kiel University advises students and staff who wish to spend a period of their studies or working life abroad. This includes the ERASMUS, PROMOS and CAU exchange programs. She has been supporting the SEA-EU project with her expertise right from the start.
Jan Winters is responsible for digital communication in the Press, Communication and Marketing Department of Kiel University. Jan Winters presents topics on social media and supports students in the realization of their ideas, such as the Lighthouse project. On a voluntary basis, Jan Winters organizes the Kiel barcamp, which has become a permanent institution in Kiel.

2nd place: Either a theater or a cinema (Studiokino) voucher (50€)
3rd place: TÜÜT package or products (30€) of the young Kiel-based company Umtüten
