Stronger partnership with Kobe University

Kiel University delegation from nano science as well as in law, social sciences and economics visits Japanese partner institution.



From 25 to 27 September, a 12-member delegation from Kiel University (CAU) visited one of its partner institutions, Kobe University in Japan. The aim of the trip was to strengthen existing cooperation in nano science as well as in law, social sciences and economics and to set up further strategic partnerships. The international exchange is to be supported both by joint scientific projects as well as by exchange visits by researchers and students. Colleagues from the Far East had already visited Kiel University last year. The university partnership between the CAU and Kobe University, one of Japan's oldest and biggest universities, has existed since 2016.


Extending cooperations

During the three-day trip, scientists from Kobe and Kiel, including members of the priority research area Kiel Nano, Surface and Interface Science (KiNSIS), presented their current research subjects in various workshops: Materials Science and Physics, Business Administration as well as International Political Sociology and Law. In addition, the visitors from Kiel gained an overview of local scientific infrastructures and laboratories in order to identify opportunities for cooperation.  

Professor Franz Faupel, Institute for Materials Science at Kiel University's Faculty of Engineering, presented Kiel's current subjects of nanoscience research alongside his colleague Prof. Dr Regine Willumeit-Römer (CAU/ Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht) and Prof. Dr Jan Benedikt (Institute of Experimental and Applied Physics, CAU). "Several areas are of equally great interest at the same time, such as biodegradable implants, membranes for material separation and other applications, as well as materials for sensors and actuators. We want to sound out the possibilities for concrete cooperation in these areas," said Faupel. The materials scientist has had close contact with Kobe University since the 1990s and held a guest professorship there in 2015. Discussions on materials science and physics will also further support the international networking of the priority research area KiNSIS. 

Five students of Kiel go to Kobe

Since as early as the year 2000, Kiel University's Faculty of Engineering has enjoyed a faculty partnership with Kobe University, with mutual visits for research and teaching and joint scientific projects. Kiel University's Faculty of Business, Economics and Social Sciences also entered into a faculty partnership with its Japanese colleagues in 2014. Alongside the university agreement in 2016, an agreement on regular student exchanges was also signed. "We are delighted that a total of five students will be travelling to Kobe this coming winter and summer semester," said Andreas Ritter of Kiel University's International Center.

Details, which are only a millionth of a millimetre in size: this is what the priority research area "Kiel Nano, Surface and Interface Science – KiNSIS" at Kiel University has been working on. In the nano-cosmos, different laws prevail than in the macroscopic world - those of quantum physics. Through intensive, interdisciplinary cooperation between physics, chemistry, engineering and life sciences, the priority research area aims to understand the systems in this dimension and to implement the findings in an application-oriented manner. The delegation from Kiel visited several research centres in Kobe and the surrounding area, including SPring-8, one of the world's largest synchrotron radiation facilities, which carries out experiments with x-rays.
