Twostunningescortsguidevisitorsuptheoutdoorstairsandtowardsthemuseum:thebisonsweightonnes(sculptor:AugustGaul)andconstitutetheimposingentrancetoanequallyimposingbuilding–Kiel’sartmuseum,theKunsthallezuKiel.TheKunsthalleisnotsimplyamuseumwithitsowncollectionandexhibitionhall;itisalsooneofKielUniversity’sinstitutionsandfeaturesalecturetheatreandalibrary,makingtheKunsthalletheonlyinstitutionofitskindinGermany.

“Thehistoryofthebuilding,whichwasbuiltbetween1903and1909,isquitespecial,”accordingtoDrAnetteHüsch,directoroftheKunsthalle:thepropertyonDüsternbrookerWegwasagiftfromaprofessor’sdaughternamedCharlotte,or“Lotte”,Hegewisch(1822–1903).In1820herfatheracquiredthe“Klein-Elmeloo”,apieceofpropertynamedafteritselmsandlocatedoutsideofthegatesofKiel,whereheintendedtobuildasummerhome.Lottelivedonherownthereduringthelastpartofherlife.In1886shelearnedatfirsthandthattherewereplanstoreplacethecastlegardenanditsoldtreeswithamuseum.TheSchleswig-HolsteinischerKunstverein(Schleswig-HolsteinArtAssociation)wantedabuildingwhereitcouldexhibititscollection.

Tosavethecastlegarden,LotteHegewischdecidedtobequeathherhouseandpropertytoKielUniversitysothenewartmuseumcouldbebuilt.Theartmuseumwasalsosupposedtobecometheartassociation’smainofficeandprovideexhibitionspaceforitscollection.AfterLotte’sdeathin1903,constructionofthenewbuildingbegan.TheNeo-baroqueandJugendstilbuildingwasopenedin1909.Thebisonsculpturescametorestinfrontoftheentranceshortlyafterwards.

Thebuildingwasenlargedin1986.TheKunsthalleneededanewwingbecausethecollectionbelongingtotheuniversityandtheartassociationhadgrownconsiderably.TheKunsthallenowownsmorethan300sculpturesand1,200paintingsfromDürer’stimetothepresent,includingworksbyEmilNolde,GeorgBaselitz,NeoRauchandGerhardRichter.Italsoownsapproximately40,000graphicworksfromtheearly16thcenturytothepresent,aswellasnumerousphotographsandvideoinstallations.

Thepermanentcollectionexhibitionisdisplayedintheoldwingandchangeseveryyear.“Wehavespaceforpiecesbyguestartistsinthenewwing,”thedirectorexplains.Theteamhasatotalof2,000squaremetresatitsdisposal,notcountingthecollectionofclassicalantiquitiesonthegroundfloor.“ThecollectionbelongstotheInstituteforArchaeology;theKunsthalleisanindependentinstitutionoftheuniversity,”accordingtoHüsch.Thelargereferencelibraryalsotestifiestothecloserelationshipwiththeuniversity.Withover55,000volumes,ithasthelargestcollectionofpublicationsdevotedtoartandarthistoryfromthe19thcenturytothepresentinSchleswig-Holstein.TheKunsthallealsohasalecturetheatre.

“Weaddressbothstudentsandmembersofthegeneralpublicwhoareinterestedinartinequalmeasure,”Hüschexplains.Helpingpeopleaccessartisanexcitingchallenge,especiallyintimesofdigitalisation,whenpaintingsandsculpturescanbeseenontheInternet.Withnotonlyworkshopsbutalsopaintingandartcoursesforallagegroups,the17-personteamandnumerousfreelanceartseducationemployeesinvitevisitorstoengageininteractiveandcreativedialogueswiththepiecesattheKunsthalle.TheteamattheKunsthallealsodrawsawiderangeofvisitorsbyorganisingchangingexhibitions:sometimesvisitorscandiscovertraditionalworkintherooms,andsometimestheycanviewcontemporaryart.
