The University Board
The University Board heads the university in accordance with the Higher Education Act (HSG). The University Boards consists of the President, up to three other elected Vice-Presidents and the Chancellor. The Central Administration supports the University Board in carrying out its tasks.

Management of the University Board
The Management of the University Board organises the University Board’s and the university’s central committee’s schedules and processes. It is also responsible for the Legal Affairs department and the Data Protection Officer, the Deutschlandstipendium scholarship programme as well as internal matters and appointments for the Central Administration.
- The Central Office for Gender Equality, Equal Opportunity and Family represents the areas of Gender Equality, Equal Opportunity, Mentoring, GenderConsulting, Family Service and the Welcome Service for new appointees in particular.
- Internal Auditing supports the University Board in carrying out its tasks, by process-independent and objective auditing activities and advisory services.
- The Management of the University Board organises the University Board’s and the university’s central committee’s schedules and processes. It is also responsible for fundraising as well as internal matters and appointments for the Central Administration:
- Press, Communication and Marketing Services assists the University Board by externally representing the university and by developing and implementing strategies for communication.
- The Animal Welfare Officer's unit advises and monitors scientists in the execution of animal experiments and ensures compliance with regulations in the interest of animal welfare.
- The Central Unit: Safety Engineering advises and supports supervisors, managers and employees at the CAU in matters related to occupational safety.
- The Continuing Professional Development Centre supports members of the university and other institutes with professional academic qualifications and personal career development.
- The representative for radiation safety advises and supports supervisors, managers and employees at the CAU on dealing with radiation.
- The Diversity and Anti-Discrimination Unit supports the Presidential Board in taking into account and promoting the diversity of the University's members. Anti-discrimination counselling is also located here.

The Faculty of Theology combines the study and research of Protestant theology and non-denominational ethical issues. This faculty at Kiel University is liberally-theologically diversified, covering teacher training programmes, practical theological research and historical studies. Training as a priest is one of the Faculty of Theology’s primary tasks. The faculty accommodates five institutes and other additional facilities.

Committees and bodies of academic self-governance
Central committees
- The University Board is the head of the university. It produces the structural, development and budget plans, and carries out the Senate’s resolutions.
- The Senate is elected by all members of the university and thus represents all the university’s status groups. Its most important tasks include passing resolutions for the university’s constitution and statutes, electing members of the University Board and making decisions about basic structural university topics.
- The Senate forms advisory committees to prepare its resolutions.
- The University Council consists of five external members. Its tasks include approving recommendations and opinions, passing resolutions for the university’s structural and developmental planning, and approving statutes.
- The Kuratorium pro universitate (University Board of Trustees) is a group which is committed to general university concepts and Kiel University in particular. The trustees are appointed to strengthen Kiel University in its magnitude and significance, to advise it and to promote it politically and socially.
Faculty Committees
- Members from all status groups consult and make decisions about faculty matters in the Conventions.
- The Dean is the head of the specialist department, and prepares and carries out the resolutions for the Department Convention. The Dean’s Office supports the Dean and the Vice Deans with their leadership tasks.

Officers
- The central Equal Opportunity Commissioner considers the interests of female members of the university and supports the University Board in its work to establish equality between women and men in science and to remove discrimination against women from the university.
- The Officer for Diversity represents students’ and doctoral researchers’ issues and, within the framework of planning and organising studies and teaching, research, further education and administration, is the contact person for removing barriers and disadvantages that still exist.
- The Officer for Inclusion represents issues related to severely disabled people and ensures that the legal rights of the disabled, workers’ interest groups and the representative body for the disabled are respected.
- The representative for radiation safety advises and supports supervisors, managers and employees at the CAU on dealing with radiation.
- The Animal Welfare Officer’s tasks are regulated in Section 10 of the German Animal Protection Act (Tierschutzgesetz, TierSchG) and Section 5 of the Act Protecting Animals Used for Research Purposes (Tierschutzversuchstierverordnung, TierSchVersV).
