Professional skills of biology teachers

“My subject is Biology Education, i.e. the science of teaching and learning biology. As a school subject, biology is very diverse: pupils are expected to acquire specialist knowledge of biology, but at the same time also be familiar with research methods used in the natural sciences and understand the moral/ethical relevance of social challenges that relate to biology, such as mandatory vaccinations. Biology teachers require a broad repertoire of knowledge and skills to plan and conduct their lessons appropriately, taking this diversity into account. With my research, I would like to understand the extent to which (prospective) biology teachers develop the required skills during their studies and beyond and how these can be promoted, among other things.”
