All of the university’s member groups are represented in the Extended Senate, which was first elected at the Kiel University in 2018, albeit with a different ratio of votes to those in the Senate. The responsibilities of this body are as follows:

• Nomination of members of the Extended Senate in the selection committees for President and Chancellor
• Election of the Diversity Officer
• Decision on dignities and honors other than honorary doctorates
• Election of the Equal Opportunity Commissioner
• Approval of regulations in a code of conduct on the employment conditions of university staff
