Senate Committees

The Senate forms advisory committees to prepare its resolutions. Its members are elected by the Senate in November for a term of two years, the student representatives for a term of one year.

 

Central Study Committee

The Central Study Committee is a compulsory committee according to the Higher Education Act (HSG). It advises on the introduction and amendment of internal legislation in the field of study (e.g. study and examination regulations), on the establishment or abolition of courses of study and on certification and (re) certification of courses of study, in particular

  • statements and proposals on the establishment, modification and abolition of courses of study,
  • statements on examination regulations of the departments before their approval by the University Board,
  • statements on interdisciplinary regulations for examination/central statutes (examination procedure rules, two-subject examination regulations, registration, recognition statute)
  • statements on (re) certification of courses of study and requirements as well as on processing the requirements in the context of certifications

Central Committee for Research and Knowledge Transfer

The Central Committee for Research and Knowledge Transfer is a compulsory committee based on the Higher Education Act (HSG). According to its title, it deals with the topics of research as well as research and knowledge transfer. In preparation for the Senate, it deals in particular with the further development of collaborative research in the four cross-faculty research and funding priorities established at the Kiel University, which also include the promotion of young researchers and internationalisation. Fundamental matters of individual research are also dealt with here. The committee is also concerned with the possibilities of transferring the knowledge gained from research and science into society.

Central Budget and Planning Committee


The Central Budget and Planning Committee is a compulsory committtee according to the Higher Education Act (HSG). It focuses on the financial planning of Kiel University. To this end, it prepares in particular the decisions of the Senate on budget planning and the budget for the respective financial year. It shall be informed of the audit of the budget accounts by an auditor, on the basis of which it shall recommend to the Senate for giving discharge to the University Board for the budgetary management. In addition, this committee is concerned with fundamental planning and structural issues in order to prepare appropriate senate resolutions.

Central Committee for Teacher Training


The Central Committee for Teacher Training deals with topics relating to the study of all teacher training students. The focus is on forming the profile of teacher training in ist structure and topics, in particular

  • content-related design and organisation of courses, study, research and further education in an interdisciplinary manner,
  • coordination of the structure of the courses offered by the faculties (Section 49 Higher Education Act) and priority research areas, also in further education,
  • advise and decision on fundamental inter-faculty questions of teacher training,
  • coordination of faculties in matters of teaching and study organisation in teaching degree programm,
  • preparation of senate resolutions in inter-faculty teacher training matters (Section 2 of the ZAfL statutes),
  • election of the members of the Board of Directors of the Center for Teacher Training (Section 4 (3) of the ZfL statutes).

Central Committee for Quality Management

In connection with the preparation for system accreditation, the Central Committee for Quality Management (ZAQM) deals primarily with the questions of what understanding of quality Kiel University has for the area of study and teaching and how this quality can be ensured. The Committee therefore focuses on the internal monitoring of the quality management at Kiel University and the measures that can be derived from the results of central evaluations. The Central Committee for Quality Management (ZAQM) deals with the strategic instruments of certification and further development of degree programmes, e.g. evaluations. It serves as a strategic discussion panel to advice on the further development of concepts and structures for study and teaching.

  • internal monitoring of the Quality Management (QM) System (exchange on conceptual and practical questions, advice on evaluation and certification statutes, exchange on results of internal certification)

  • derivation of measures from central evaluation results (report on the results of the general student survey, the graduate study, the survey of new students and dropouts)

Central Committee for Gender Equality


The Central Committee for Gender Equality is a compulsory committee according to the Higher Education Act (HSG) and deals with the discussion, revision and adoption of the „equality plan“ as well as the allocation of funding for women, who, for example strive to achieve a habilitation. The election of future award winners in the field of thesis or doctorates with gender-relevant content is also part of the committee work. In addition, surveys and current incidents are discussed and if problems are identified, suggestions for solutions are discussed.

Central Committee for Questions of Principle and Higher Education Act (HSG)


According to its title, this Senate Committee deals exclusively with fundamental issues of the university as well as issues of higher education law. The Committee meets only on occasion, e.g. in the reorganisation of the structural and development plan of Kiel University as well as with amendments to the Higher Education Act or other central laws. In legislative procedures, the committee may prepare recommendations and opinions for the Senate.

Committee on Information Processing

The fulfilment of the tasks of the computing centre is subject to the supervision of the university board, advised by the advisory boards "Teaching, Services, Basic Services" and "Scientific Accounting, Digital Research Infrastructure".  The Committee on Information Processing shall send interested parties to these advisory boards.

  • the head of the computer centre with the right of application and an advisory vote,
  • one representative of each faculty, on behalf of the chairperson of the corresponding faculty committee, and another representative of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, appointed by the Dean,
  • one representative of the central units,
  • one respresentative of the central unit "Clinic" or of a state institute as a successor organisation,
  • a representative of the institutes at the university that make significant use of the university's information infrastructure,
  • two representatives from among those using high performance computers,
  • five representatives of member groups according to Section 13 (1) No 2 to 4 High Education Law (HSG) at a ratio of 2 : 2 : 1.

Central Commission for the Promotion of Young Academics and Artists

The Central Commission for the Promotion of Young Academics and Artists is one of the Senate committees pursuant to Section 21 (2) s. 1 HSG. It deals with issues related to the qualification phases during and after the doctorate and tenure-track procedures at CAU.
The commission makes recommendations to the Senate regarding cross-faculty procedural regulations, the definition of quality standards and ensuring good framework conditions for qualification phases and tenure-track procedures. At the same time, the Commission is the permanent advisory board set up by the University Board to ensure consistent formal standards for interim and tenure evaluations. The Commission can also submit proposals to the University Board in all fields of action.

Central Ethics Committee


The Central Ethics Committee is a compulsory committee according to the High Education Act (HSG). Its tasks consist in the preparation of fundamental decisions of the university in questions of ethical relevance, the receipt of an overview of third-party funding projects pursuant to section 11 (2) HSG, the advice on further development of standards on ethical aspects in research, teaching, transfer etc. under changing framework conditions and hazards. It prepares decisions and statements of the Senate on overarching issues, e.g. for the adoption of policy documents and codes on ethical aspects in research and teaching or with regard to the structure of advisory bodies.
