Since 2002, Kiel University (CAU) has been certified as a “family-oriented university”, making it the first audited comprehensive university in Germany. The permanent certificate was awarded in a ceremony yesterday (Tuesday, 20 June) by the berufundfamilie Service GmbH in Berlin. Federal Minister for Family Affairs, Dr Katarina Barley, and John-Philip Hammersen, Managing Director of the Hertie Foundation, presented the award to Kiel University’s Vice President, Professor Anja Pistor-Hatam. A total of 353 employers received the label. These included 159 companies, 153 institutions and 41 universities. Ten certificates were awarded permanently to long-term certified universities and 46 were awarded to companies and institutions.

Over the past years, Kiel University has brought about successful services and measures which create family-friendly conditions for working and studying. These include expanding childcare facilities, setting up working time models or the disadvantage compensation model for students. The establishment of commissioners for family affairs in all faculties, Clusters of Excellence and the University’s Graduate Center has also been distinguished as an innovative model example by the German Research Foundation (DFG). The Family Service is also celebrating its tenth birthday this year, as a central contact point and advisory service. “The objective of the long-term certification is to permanently embed family-oriented topics and to secure the existing services,” emphasised Vice President Anja Pistor-Hatam.

For President Professor Lutz Kipp the term family-oriented affects all members of the university: “For me, establishing and practising a family-friendly culture at a university means that family-oriented topics are considered in all the relevant processes, documents and areas.” This often occurs in very specific everyday events: Will my colleagues be understanding when my child is ill? Can I work from home flexibly? Will meetings be organised in a way that I can easily take part? Do we as superiors respect the fact that free time is free time? “As a university, we also always have to keep an eye on our students in particular, especially when they have families or are caring for family members. Living situations like these require supervisors to show understanding and come up with flexible solutions,” continued Kipp. He therefore calls out to all managers at Kiel University to promote structures which are necessary to achieve the objectives of a family-oriented university. Kipp: “If we manage to do this, the University will become a place to work and to learn at which everybody can achieve their personal and professional goals comfortably and happily.”
